This train is headed for the "W" Line. The "W" Line was completed a few months ago and largely follows the old BN Federal Branch right of way heading west. There is something rather unusual about this coal empty that you may not realize at first. It is being led by a C44-9W, which has DC traction motors instead of AC traction motors. At that point, the tracks here were still mostly in a field, with just a few of the buildings under construction. Here, an SD70ACe leads a coal load south on Main 1 alongside an empty stopped on Main 2. (The 8,100-foot Lodo Siding sits empty to the right). But, I must admit, over the years (and through the models...from SD9043MAC to SD70ACe), the look has grown on me. Dozens of buildings have been built in that time and the tracks (both the Joint Line and Light Rail) now run through was is essentially a trench of buildings! Even just five years ago, the building to the left was a parking lot. In this shot, an RTD "E" Line train approaches the Denver Station as a southbound coal load proceeds on Main 2. The sign in the foreground clearly indicates there will be eight tracks total. At least one of those tracks will be reserved for "heavy rail" trains such as Amtrak. Hopefully there will be a second track dedicated to heavy rail so trains like Cheyenne Frontier Days will have a home, when needed. As part of the agreement, Union Pacific is getting a second main track and CTC in the area. Once complete, this bridge will be nearly 5,000 feet long! It is here that the commuter rail will leave the UP right of way and swing north, crossing the track, Airport Blvd, 32nd Avenue and I-70.
