I must admit, I sure wouldn't mind being a passenger on the Zephyr on this day! The westbound Zephyr heads down the main at East Portal, about a mile away from the Moffat Tunnel.

This train just received a fresh crew and the dispatcher got a signal at the west end of Roggen for the train to depart. BNSF has approved some capital expenditures for the Brush Sub, hence the ties littering the right of way.

This westbound coal load is just starting to roll on the siding at Roggen. The gates are down for Weld County Road 73, which the train is just about to cross as it heads for the west end of Roggen.

Piles of new ties line the right of way. BNSF has approved sinking some money in to the Brush Sub in 2015, hence the new ties along the mainline. This westbound coal train load is headed toward Denver. Once there, it will get a new crew before turning south and heading for the Joint Line.

A coal load, led by a great looking SD70MAC (with the original "Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway" herald still on the nose) progresses west out of Hudson. If you look carefully in the distance, you can see a train in the siding at Hudson. That is the Hudson Turn, a local which regularly switches out a large industry just northeast of town. This coal load, which is following I-76, will take the siding at Tonville to meet an eastbound manifest.

there is a nice cut about a mile west of Keensburg. It is a great place for getting both eastbounds and westbounds. Case in point is this eastbound manifest, currently in dynamics as it heads down grade. The train is being led by a (recently) highly popular ES44C4. While BNSF management appears to love these units, word is that engineers are not so crazy about them.

A former SOO SD60 (now owned by CIT Finance, a railroad leasing company) heads east out of Denver on a manifest. I thought it was particularly fortuitous, catching this unit, as I have shot it a couple of times over the previous nine months in and around Denver. For most of its time in town, it was used as power on the Beer Run between Denver and Golden.

A CEFX leasor SD60 adds a splash of color...or perhaps, more accurately, a splash of lack of color...with its dominate white scheme. This eastbound manifest is round a long curve just west of Keensburg, which is visible in the distance.

There is a long, sweeping curve that approaches a cut just west of Keensburg on the Brush Sub. While this curve offers pretty descent shots any time of day, afternoon shots of westbounds are just about as ideal as you could ask for. Such is the case here, as this westbound coal load slowly pulls up the grade out of Keensburg. The train just met a manifest, and had to start pulling up the grade from a stop.

At the siding of Wiggins (in the town of Wiggins, CO), a westbound coal load (in the siding) meets an eastbound manifest (on the main). As is common in so many plains towns, agricultural buildings can be found alongside the tracks. BNSF 5746 (leading the coal load) is a pre-production ES44AC; one of the first such units built. It was actually released prior to the introduction of BNSF's New Image scheme, first seen in 2005.

A telephoto shot of this westbound coal load amplifies the "roller coaster" feel of the tracks on the plains. There are miles and miles of ties along the right-of-way as BNSF is investing roughly $140 million in the Brush Sub in 2015. In addition to tie replacement, BNSF is extending the sidings of Bijou, Crest, Hudson, Messex, Roggen, and Tonville. They will also start on projects to extend Barr, Keensburg, New Hillrose, and Wiggins, although those projects won't be completed until 2016. It has also been suggested that BNSF plans to add a second main track to some (or even all) of the Brush Sub in the next few years to increase fluidity on the line.

Just east of Roggen, Country Road 75.5 crosses the tracks. A westbound coal load has just cleared that dirt road, and is slowing to come to a stop. The train is taking the siding at Roggen, but will hang out the east end for a bit so as not to block the grade crossing in town. Once the westbound it is meeting gets closer, the dispatcher will instruct the crew to pull in to the clear.

By the end of the year, the east end of the siding will likely be behind the photographer, as BNSF intends to lengthen the siding in 2015.

Between the sidings of Irondale and Barr, CO-2 crosses over the tracks. The bridge offers a pretty good view of westbounds. Such is the case with this shot of the westbound Hudson Turn. The train entirely consists of tank cars and covered hoppers, and is blocked accordingly.
