About 15 minutes before the sun crests the horizon, a westbound UP manifest emerges from the darkness along the rails, reflecting light from the fiery morning sky.

Generally speaking, UP's daily North Yard, CO to Roper, UT manifest is called at 3:30am. Meaning the crew for the train literally receives a phone call informing them of their train. The crew has 2 hours to get to North Yard and start working on the train. The process from call time to departure is typically 3-4 hours. The result is usually an early morning departure, often an hour or so ahead of Amtrak. Such is the case this morning as an SD70ACe-led manifest heads west of Leyden on a clear signal about 15 minutes ahead of sunrise.
