The Denver-Metro area is not generally prone to a lot of fog. However, once a year or so, you wake up to a morning in which visibility is limited to just a few hundred feet. This morning was one such example! I thought it might be cool to get a few shots of a westbound coal empty and the westbound Zephyr at Leyden. Here, the coal empty lights up the fog as it charges west on a clear signal on the main at Leyden. Black and white seems wholly appropriate for the shot!

With the exception of the SD9043MAC, GE's have dominated UP coal trains in Colorado for the better part of two decades. However, more and more SD70ACes have been showing up on the few coal trains that are still running on the Moffat. Here, a pair of them lead two GEs on a coal empty destined for the West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch in western Colorado.

A pair of P42DCs leading a standard consist for the California Zephyr approach an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal at the west end of Leyden. A coal empty that came through 15 minute earlier is working on pulling in to the clear at Rocky and the signal reflects that. By the time the Zephyr reaches Rocky, however, the empty will be entirely in the clear, allowing the Zephyr to continue on its way.

The westbound Zephyr approaches the west end of Leyden on an extremely foggy morning in western Arvada. This is an area that has changed a lot in the last 20 years. It wasn't long ago that the houses to the left (in the neighborhood of Five Parks) were not there. North of Leyden was just a field! Now, Leyden is surrounded by development, smack in the middle of suburbia!
