A string of 11 light engines makes its way west on the main at Leyden. The first six units will be used as mid-train swing helpers on coal trains coming off the North Fork Branch. Been awhile since I've seen such a power move on behalf of coal trains! The last five units are all older geeps that will join the 150+ units already being stored in Grand Junction.

A former Missouri Pacific GP15-1 joins a several other geeps as part of a light power move from Denver to Grand Junction. With the recent downturn in rail traffic, these units are surplus for UP and are headed for storage. For how long? That remains to be seen.

I've always been a fan of the blue paint scheme used on GATX leasers. With the decrease in rail traffic (and, consequently, the decrease in power demands), this unit is DIC (Dead In Consist) on a light power move destined for Grand Junction. There, it will sit until such time as it is needed in the future.

One of several HLCX GP38-2s passes by the photographer on the main track at Leyden. These units are headed for Grand Junction where they will be put in storage by Union Pacific. Two years ago, railroads could not obtain power fast enough. Now, they are putting power in storage by the hundreds!
