North of the city of Wellington, CO, the Front Range Explorer special follows a gentle curve to the northeast. The train has made good time from Denver to Cheyenne and will only make one additional stop prior to reaching Cheyenne. The train will need to stop at the south siding switch of Owl Canyon as the switch is reversed for the siding.

North of Wellington, the Front Range Explorer special crosses a bridge running over North County Road 7. Those passengers on sitting on the open vestibule of the last car must really be enjoying the ride.

Larimer County Road 5 follows the tracks for roughly five miles south of the siding of Norfolk. The road is on the west side of the tracks, however, meaning it was time for an artsy backlit shot. The Front Range Explorer passes by a wide open field under hazy skies on its journey north.

Now in Wyoming, the Front Range Explorer pulls through the south switch of Speer. This siding is relatively short and seldomly used. In the distance, you can see tracks on a bridge. This is UP's Greeley Sub, which the BNSF Front Range Sub crosses underneath.

We are about four miles north of the Colorado/Wyoming border as the Front Range Explorer glides by on the main track at Speer. In the distance, you can just see a few cars on I-25, which the train just passed beneath.

Riding in style! These passengers have been sitting on the open vestibule for most of the trip from Denver up to Cheyenne. Not that I blame them...that is likely exactly where I'd be sitting as well if I were on the train.

Happy passengers! The first leg of the day's journey is nearly complete as the Front Range Explorer, a specially chartered train, rolls north past the siding of Speer toward Cheyenne. There, a BNSF Pilot will board the train for the continued trip north. The train will run up the Orin Subdivision through the Powder River Basin and ultimately tie up in Gillette, WY for the night.

Laramie (UP) Union Pacific
A couple of miles west of Cheyenne finds a manifest on the move on UP's Laramie Subdivision. The train is on UP's busiest route...the Overland Route. Traveling on Main 2 at the moment, the train will change crews in Cheyenne and the new crew will keep the train rolling east toward Bailey Yard in North Platte, NE.
