The road is on the west side of the tracks, however, meaning it was time for an artsy backlit shot. The Front Range Explorer passes by a wide open field under hazy skies on its journey north. This siding is relatively short and seldomly used. In the distance, you can see tracks on a bridge. This is UP's Greeley Sub, which the BNSF Front Range Sub crosses underneath. The first leg of the day's journey is nearly complete as the Front Range Explorer, a specially chartered train, rolls north past the siding of Speer toward Cheyenne. There, a BNSF Pilot will board the train for the continued trip north. The train will run up the Orin Subdivision through the Powder River Basin and ultimately tie up in Gillette, WY for the night. The train is on UP's busiest route...the Overland Route. Traveling on Main 2 at the moment, the train will change crews in Cheyenne and the new crew will keep the train rolling east toward Bailey Yard in North Platte, NE.
