The day after the Cheyenne Frontier Days train had a successful run with UP 844, the train is now completing its process of wying (turning around) in Denver. UP 844 will need to take on water (in the "water bottle") before departing for Cheyenne.

While waiting for UP 844 to depart north toward Cheyenne, this local train (with a half dozen tank cars) rolls off the inbound main in to the yard at 36th Street. Interestingly, the GP38-2 working is numbered 825. This was once the number of one of UP's 4-8-4 "Northern" class steam engines, just like UP 844!

A pair of recently-repainted (and recently-rebuilt) SD40-2s, now designated as SD40Ns, roll in to the yard at 36th Street off the Outbound Main after spotting a string of empty well cars on a house track. In my opinion, the "baby wings" look very good on the nose of the SD40N.

UP 844 is pulling north on the Inbound Main out of UP's 36th Street Yard. The train is deadheading back to Cheyenne from Denver. Once there, UP 844 will be put away in the steam shop and the cars will likely wind up heading back to Council Bluffs, IA, where they are kept when not being used.

Ed Dickens leans slightly out the engineer cab window of UP 844 as the train approaches the grade crossing at York Street. As the train rolls towards the photography, I think to myself thank goodness the FRA allows for exceptions to the requirement of engines having ditch lights!

The Cheyenne Frontier Days deadhead special departs the Inbound Main at Sand Creek Jct and starts to cross over the bridge that crosses the junctions namesake, Sand Creek.

A final shot of UP 844 and crew as they depart Denver for the journey north to Cheyenne, passing by the Suncor Oil Refinery in Commerce City. Here's hoping that, post-rebuild, the 8-4-8 will have many excursions in the not-too-distant future.

I couldn't resist a final roster shot of UP 1989 as it departs with UP 844 north toward Cheyenne. It had been five years (and five days) since I last shot it and who knows how long it'll be before it finds its way through town again.
