A 15-car manager's special glides down the main at East Bond. Notice that part of the investment in the Moffat that UP has made in recent years is to replace the wood ties on both the main and the siding with concrete ties. Concrete ties hold up better under heavier trains and typically last longer and need less maintenance than their wooden counterparts.

This westbound manager's special is rolling down the main at Bond (sometimes referred to as "Center Bond"). It is here than the Craig Branch (original grade of the Denver and Salt Lake) departs to the right and starts climbing toward Steamboat Springs. This control point also separates the East Siding from the West Siding at Bond. This is just about the end of the journey for the crew on the point of the manager's special. They will stop the train in Bond for a crew change. The next crew will take the train to Grand Junction.

With a fresh crew that got on the train at Bond, this manager's special follows the Colorado River on the Dotsero Cutoff. The pair of brand new ET44AHs look mighty fine on the point of the train. I'm not sure why several UP vice presidents were taking a tour of the Moffat...although I'd like to think it is preparation for lowering the floor in the Moffat Tunnel so they can run double stacks! (Yeah, right...and Tennessee Pass will open right after that!)

After a fantastic chase from Winter Park, this would be the last shot of this manager's special for the day. The light was already quickly fading, but the road bridge over the Colorado River (directly behind the photographer) was closed! Crews are working on widening the bridge to two lanes and had the single lane bridge blocked. We would wait another 20 minutes after the train passed before the bridge opened up.
