There was a time, 15-20 years ago, when you could regularly find a coal train tied down on the siding at Leyden. You could almost count on it. There wouldn't be enough room in the yard, so trains would be held out at Leyden or even Rocky to wait for a relief crew. With the construction of the bypass tracks and the decline in coal, such a sight has become rare. However, such an occurrence did happen the previous night. The crew on this coal train "died" and had to tie the train down in the siding at Leyden. Here, the following morning, the sun is shining brightly and the temperature is a bitter -5°F.

Running almost precisely on time, the westbound California Zephyr moves quickly west on the main at Leyden, undeterred by the snow and freezing cold weather.

I can say with total honesty that I would have been very happy to have been on the inside of the Zephyr on this morning. The temperature in this shot had not yet reached 0°F! 6-12 inches of the white stuff fell over the previous two days. Now, the clouds cleared out, meaning the temperatures plummeted.

I love winter in Colorado. Actually, I love all seasons in Colorado. Getting the heat radiating off a coal train through a telephoto lens at Leyden is great in July when it is 95°F out. Then again, it is also wonderful getting a shot of the Zephyr as it kicks up snow clouds in January when it is -5°F out!

Even though the sun is shining brightly, it is still way too cold out for much of the snow to have melted away yet. Nearly 12 inches of the white stuff fell here over the past 48 hours, offering a beautiful white blanket to the scenery for the westbound run of the California Zephyr.
