An eastbound BNSF oil train, which loaded in Wellington, UT, makes it way through some freshly fallen snow at Leyden. A few flakes are still falling, though the storm is starting to wind down. It was a chilly 17°F out!

Finally! Snow! It has been 25 days since there was any measurable snow in the Denver-Metro area, but a quick moving storm dropped several inches of the white stuff on this day. An eastbound BNSF loaded oil train rolls down the main at Leyden on a clear signal.

Despite the fact that "green and cream" SD70MACs were very plentiful on Joint Line coal trains, these units have never had much of a presence on BNSF trains on the Moffat. So it is always nice to come across one, such as on this eastbound oil train that is headed out of Leyden. The SD70MAC is the final DPU on the train.

This winter has been a relatively mild one along the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. Temperatures have been in the 50°Fs on a fairly regular basis and snow has been all but non-existent. So it was quite nice to get a shot of a loaded oil train kicking up some of the white stuff on Martin Luther King Day.

There was a relatively brief period in 2015, when oil prices were much higher, it looked as though oil trains might become a regular staple on the Moffat. Both BNSF and UP seemed to run about one a week. However, when prices dropped and it became less economical to ship by rail, the new trains all but evaporated! BNSF still runs one...occasionally...though they are hard to predict. One happened to be rolling east here at Leyden on Martin Luther King Day.
