A westbound coal empty heads west out of Leyden on a beautiful May afternoon. The train is headed for the West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch.

This has become one of my favorite places to shoot the Moffat in the Arvada area and this is actually the first time I've shot from this spot when the field is green. A westbound coal empty rolls past the (relatively) new neighborhood of Leyden Rock.

A very short work train rolls east on the Moffat just east of Barbara's Gulch. The train will turn south down the Joint Line as it is ultimately headed for Santa Teresa, NM.

Unfortunately, a tagger managed to get to this AC4400CW. An awesome UP employee (presumably) took the time to clean off the American flag on the long hood. The sole unit on this work train is an ex-Espee unit. Specifically, SP 149.

This interesting monstrosity is a ballast washer. As the name suggests, it scoops up ballast, washes it, and lays it back down. Cleaning the ballast and removing oil and soot and dirt from it actually does help to extend it life.

A work train, consisting of a single unit and a ballast washer, is headed for New Mexico. The train just met a coal empty at Leyden, but now has a clear shot the rest of the way in to town.
