Today's westbound Zephyr had a bit of a unique consist. A pair of Siemens SC-44s and a P42DC lead the Zephyr west at Leyden. Get used to these SC-44s because Amtrak has ordered 75 similar units (called ALC-42s) to start to replace their aging P42DC fleet. The P42DCs are over 20 years old now and many are falling in to a state of disrepair. The ALC-42s are currently being tested and are expected to start to show up and really take over for P42DCs in late 2021.

Get ready for a change when it comes to long distance Amtrak trains! The P42DC fleet is now more than two decades old and their age is starting to show. Consequently, Amtrak has ordered 75 ALC-42s from Siemens. These units, IDTX 4628 and IDTX 4632 are SC-44s being tested by Amtrak on today's westbound Zephyr. They are similar to the ALC-42s, but the ALC-42s will have slightly larger fuel tanks and have some other minor tweaks to improve performance on long distance trains. They are 4,400 HP with 16-cylinder Cummins prime movers.
