A pair of Siemens SC-44s and a P42DC lead the Zephyr west at Leyden. Get used to these SC-44s because Amtrak has ordered 75 similar units (called ALC-42s) to start to replace their aging P42DC fleet. The P42DCs are over 20 years old now and many are falling in to a state of disrepair. The P42DC fleet is now more than two decades old and their age is starting to show. Consequently, Amtrak has ordered 75 ALC-42s from Siemens. These units, IDTX 4628 and IDTX 4632 are SC-44s being tested by Amtrak on today's westbound Zephyr. They are similar to the ALC-42s, but the ALC-42s will have slightly larger fuel tanks and have some other minor tweaks to improve performance on long distance trains. You might even mistake this train (at first glance) as a unit oil train. However, the lack of a buffer car between the power and the first tank car indicates this is not a unit oil train.
