Bridgeport, NE is the location of a lot of railroad action most days! BNSF's Valley Sub joins in with the Angora Sub here. A wye allows trains coming off the Valley Sub to turn north toward Alliance or south toward Colorado and the Brush Sub. In addition, UP's two main track South Morrill Sub cuts through the scene, crossing the Angora Sub on a diamond. In this shot, a UP coal empty heading for the Powder River Basin (in the foreground) heads west as a BNSF coal empty, also heading or the Powder River Basin (in the background) heads west as well.

A pair of manned SD70ACes help shove on the back of this eastbound coal train as it leaves the Valley Sub behind and starts on the climb up the Angora Sub toward Alliance. The sole DPU on this train is an SD70MAC. A bit of a special catch these days as the majority of SD70MACs are currently in storage around BNSF's system.

The Sidney and Lowe Railroad is a shortline railroad consisting of about 11 miles of track in the Sidney, NE area. They interchange with both BNSF and UP and are owned by Progress Rail Service. Here, two former BNSF SD75Ms sits shut off, awaiting their next assignment.

A quartet of brand new (or at least freshly painted) PR30C rebuilds sit on the Sidney and Lowe shortline near Sidney, NE. Former BNSF SD40-2s, the units are now lettered for PRLX, which is Progress Rail Services, the company that rebuilt them. Not sure why they would have fresh BNSF paint but be lettered PRLX. Regardless, here they sit!

With the current decline in the economy, Class 1 railroads are in need of less power and, to help reduce fuel and maintenance costs, many units have been placed in storage. Such is the case of Union Pacific as a string of 40 to 50 SD70Ms are currently being stored in the small yard in Sidney, NE along the Overland.

One of my absolute favorite (more modern) engines is the SD70M Phase 2. The Phase 2 is my favorite in particular because the radiator intakes are angled out slightly. Not as much as an SD45, but more than an SD70M Phase 1. In addition, the teardrop windshield is in place and the original EMD wide cab looks great before the new nose introduced in the Phase 3 (and subsequently on SD70ACes).

When was the last time you recall seeing a high nose unit? This GP9 has found a nice "retirement" job, working as the High Plains Co-Op switcher in Kimball, NE. The GP9 started life as Pennsylvania Railroad #7011, built in 1955. It went through the New York Central merger and became Penn Central #7011. When Penn Central went belly up and Conrail was former, this guy survived and became Conrail #7011 and was then renumbered to Conrail #7516. It was finally retired and purchased by High Plains Co-Op.
I found some pictures of the unit in previous lifes on Railroad Picture Archives. Here are some links:
