An eastbound coal load...the first in several weeks...rolls east on the main at Eisele. A couple of gondolas dropped off earlier this week sit on the siding.

An eastbound coal load comes out of the east end of Eisele and turns toward the south leg of Big Ten Loop. The train has the standard three mid-train DPUs and a single unit bringing up the rear.

A pair of ES44ACs (UP 7521 and UP 5291) lead an eastbound coal load around Big Ten Loop in front of the hoppers that have been sitting for around half a century now, serving as a wind break. In the distance, you can see the three mid-train swing helpers and the sole DPU bringing up the rear.

From a few hundred feet above the ground, the entirety of Big Ten Loop can be seen from Eisele (formerly Clay) down to Rocky. The crew on board, descending down toward Rocky, can look up to see the side of the last few cars of their train and the DPU bringing up the rear.

Three mid-train DPUs assist in dynamic braking as this coal train descends down from Big Ten Loop. This coal train has the typical configuration for loaded coal trains on the Moffat, with two units on the point, three mid-train, and one on the rear. These three unis will be cut out of the train when it reaches Bypass 2 at North Yard. The train will continue on with only three total units, the two on the point and single unit on the rear. The fresh repaint on this AC4400CW looks mighty fine!

As the tail end DPU, UP 7776, descends down the grade from Big Ten Loop, we can see the head end of the train down at Rocky! The head end is nearly 6,000 feet away by rail, but only 2,500 feet away as the crow flies across the valley. The end of the train is also about 100 feet lower in elevation.

The weather in recent weeks has been slightly cooler than seasonable average, and a bit of rainfall as well has contributed to keeping the landscape in the area around Big Ten Loop fairly green. An ES44AC in very good paint brings up the tail end of an eastbound coal load.
