Coal has been making a little bit of a resurgence on the Moffat recently. Just in the last week, the number of coal trains has increased. The previous three days, I've seen at least one coal train per day. Such is the case with this eastbound load, cutting through Arvada just east of Leyden.

Cold weather has resulted in snow staying on the ground in the Denver-Metro area for nearly four consecutive weeks. Running right on time, the westbound Zephyr heads west through Arvada, across Kipling Street and past the intermediate signals at MP 9.8.

A pair of ES44C4s lead an empty eastbound grain train at Kipling Street, just about 10 miles west of Union Station. The Denver-Metro area is low enough in elevation that some trees are still holding on to at least some of their leaves!

The two DPUs bringing up the end of this eastbound coal load pass by the now-red intermediate signal at MP 9.8. Momentarily, the line of cars will be free to continue on their way along Kipling Street and Oberon Road.

BNSF 6271, leading an eastbound coal load, pass by an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal at MP 9.7, right alongside Kipling Street. The train will head down Main 1 at Arvada, then cross over to Main 3 at Pecos and run down the main along North Yard to Fox Junction, where it will get lights over to the Joint Line.

After meeting three westbounds between Winter Park and Granby, this BNSF Provo-Denver had clear signals the rest of the trip down the front range to Denver. Here, the train passes by secluded Oberon Lake just east of Kipling Street in Arvada.

It was a real treat to catch UP 1982 - the Missouri Pacific heritage unit - headed west on the point of a rock train. It was the first time I'd seen the unit in seven year, since I was lucky enough to see all six heritage units assembled in Salt Lake City in June 2007.

A lot of railfans were surprised by the rather sudden appearance of UP 1982 on the point of a rock train on the Moffat. The Missouri Pacific heritage unit had been set to depart Denver on an autorack train to the north. However, the power desk in Denver made a last second change and the Screaming Eagle was headed west!

Extreme cold has played havoc with railroads in the Chicago area lately. So much so that both the California Zephyr and the Southwest Chief have had to run detour routes between Chicago and Galesburg, IL. Consequently, the Zephyr was running 4 1/2 hours late on this day! Coming through Arvada just before 12:30pm.

UP will frequently run a few extra units on the head end of westbound coal empties. The last four of these units are likely DIC (Dead In Consist) as they will be used later as helpers for the journey back east. This train has no DPUs, which does indicate that the train is headed for Grand Junction and the North Fork rather than the Craig Branch. Due to a lack of space, Energy-bound trains have their DPUs already set for the trip west.

A few to notice in this shot. First, Amtrak's Phase 4 heritage unit (AMTK 184) is leading the eastbound Zephyr. Second, the former "Quest" building in Denver has indeed been rebranded as "Century Link". And lastly, the new intermediate at Kipling is active and in place, showing a flashing yellow to the approaching Zephyr.

As always, you can't go wrong with a roster shot of a Heritage Unit. Sooner or later, the unit will get painted and it'll be great to have these nostalgia shots for down the road (or rails).

I believe AMTK 184 has visited the Moffat more than any other Amtrak Heritage Unit to date. While it isn't my favorite scheme ever, I really like the fact that the scheme of the unit matches the scheme on the Superliners.

UP couldn't have humored me with an east-facing DPU on the tail end of the MNYRO. Oh well...regardless, the MNYRO heads west past the newly-activated intermediate at Kipling. You can see the red aspect on the top head of the signal.
