The US military does ship equipment by rail, but coming across a military train is pretty rare. They are certainly no common. So imagine my surprise when I just happened to stumble across a meet between two loaded military trains at the siding of Carr in northern Colorado!

Fort Carson has loaded up some military equipment and sent it north toward Yermo, CA. That is the train sitting on the siding to the left. Ironically enough, Fort Carson will soon be receiving some new equipment as southbound military train passes slowly by on the main.

It appears that the red signal on the siding at the north end of car is not currently working. As you can see, BNSF 6272 is looking at a dark signal as a southbound clears the north switch. Fortunately, crews treat a dark signal as though it is a red signal. I was not around to see if the signal successfully lit up green when it was time for the train to depart.

A southbound military train rolls north of the siding of Nunn. The equipment on the train is primary transport vehicles with tires rather than treads. Several trucks and tractors are also on the train, which is headed for Fort Carson in Colorado Springs.

If you are a fan of the site, then you know that the past few years have been dominated by drone photography as it has opened a whole new world of opportunity. However, I do not want to forget my roots, so getting some shots on the ground is still important. Here, three GEs set up elephant-style lead a southbound military train just south of the town of Pierce, CO.

In between La Salle and Greeley, a southbound military train crosses over the South Platte river parallel to US-85. Back in June, when runoff and early summer rain was at record levels, the South Platte completely covered all the sand you see in this shot. Now, getting in to fall, and the river has receded. But it is still higher than it normally would be this time of year.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is in the process of building a new overpass across US-85 and UP's Greeley Sub to eliminate an at grade intersection between Country Road 44 and US-85, and a grade crossing for County Road 44. The bridge over US-85 has been complete. However, as you can clearly see, the new overpass crossing the tracks has not yet be built. The project is slated to be completely in late 2023. Will the remaining two months of the year be enough time to complete it?
