The Big Boy always attracts quite a crowd and I did not want to get stuck in traffic on US-85! Here, the train is crossing over the South Platte River amidst some very nice fall colors on a pleasant Wednesday afternoon. Back in June, when runoff and early summer rain was at record levels, the South Platte completely covered all the sand you see in this shot. Now, getting in to fall, and the river has receded. That was after near-record rainfall in the Spring. With things drying out the snow long since melted, the waters have decreased as a northbound coal empty crosses alongside US-85 just north of La Salle. US-85 parallels the tracks, crossing the river over its own bridge. The South Platte is one of the largest rivers in Colorado, which isn't saying much when compared to rivers like the Mississippi! An opportunity to get a shot like this does not happen often for a few reasons. First, the Zephyr is detouring through Wyoming and is crossing the South Platte River along US-85 on the south edge of Evans, CO. That alone is rare enough. Adding to that, however, is the fact that the Zephyr departed Denver at 3:30pm rather than its normal time of 8:05am, setting up for the great evening light.
