After several days of sub-zero temperatures, things are finally warming up in the Denver area as it is a balmy 22°F (-6°C) out. The westbound Zephyr is running a little bit late after a UP yard job had issue at North Yard and the main was briefly blocked. But the train is hustling west now, creating a blizzard of its own in its wake.

With a winter blizzard finally moving out of the area overnight, the sky is mostly clear and the temperatures are rising. It is 22°F (-6°C) this morning, an increase of nearly 30° since yesterday morning. However, the wind has also picked up a bit, blowing a lot of the freshly fallen snow around. The Zephyr is contributing a bit, kicking up snow in its own wake as it proceeds west.

A 7,100 foot long MNYGJ has stalled out on the climb out of Rocky because the 2nd and 3rd units on the head end are both failing to load. The crew has called up the dispatcher and they are waiting for UP mechanical desk to get back to them in order to troubleshoot.

UP 8843 and UP 7801 are both having issues this afternoon as neither one is loading on the climb out of Rocky. UP 8843 is overheating when throttling up, and then shuts down. UP's mechanical desk would help the crew troubleshoot UP 7801 so it would start loading again. However, nothing could be done about UP 8843. It would be isolated and the crew is waiting for the Corridor Manager to decide what the train will do.

A look at the 2% climb out of Rocky, up and toward Big Ten Curve. A trio of units are attempting to lead the MNYGJ westbound. "Attempting" is the key word as the 2nd and 3rd units both have mechanical issues and the train has come to a stop.

UP's MNYGJ is actually stopped on the 2% grade just west of Rocky. It will ultimately have to back down the main all the way to between Arvada and C&S Jct due to power issues. However, if it were to continue westbound, it would soon reach the east switch of Eisele (Clay) at the top of the frame.

A single SD70ACe brings up the end of UP's thrice-weekly MNYGJ. The is typically called at North Yard at 1800, but on this day, it was called around 1200. Unfortunately, the 7,100 foot manifest has stopped because two units on the head end have mechanical issues. Shortly, the train will pull forward to clear west Rocky, then back down between switches on the siding. However, it would turn out the train could not fit between the west switch and the derail at the east end, so the train would back all the way down to (near) North Yard for a power swap.
