The head end of this westbound Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado train crosses the border from Nebraska into Colorado. The train will shortly come to a stop as it is switching out an industry that is actually in Nebraska. The "Welcome to Colorful Colorado" sign is a little worse for ware!

Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado has a rather interesting way to operate. Because there is so much switches that the train does as it makes its way along the line, the engineer rides in the engine alone. The conductor parallels the train in a pickup truck! This way, the conductor can drive to any switches that need to be thrown, rather than having to walk along the train. You can see the pickup on the highway, driving alongside the train as it heads toward Holyoke, CO for its next switch job.

There is a massive grain elevator in the very small town of Amherst, CO. In the most recent census, the population of the town was 47! An NKCR westbound passes by the grain elevator on this Monday. No work to do, so it will continue west.

This particular Monday afternoon, the wind was really blowing out on the plains. Most of the day, the winds were at least 30 MPH sustained, and that number often got up to 40-50 MPH. Fortunately, it wasn't too cold, but the wind was a bit of a challenge. Evidence of the wind is quite clear in this shot of this NKCR manifest pulling into the east end of Holyoke (pronounced "hole-ee-oak"). A long piece of plastic wrap got stuck on the coupler of OMLX 419, and it is blowing wildly in the wind.

The conductor for this westbound train is unlocking and preparing to throw this switch on the main. Doing so will allow the power to back into the track in order to pick up a few box cars for the continued journey west.

After picking up a handful of boxcars from an industry here in Holyoke, OMLX 419 is pulling back out onto the Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado Railway mainline. After the train has pulled entirely onto the main, it will back up to the rest of its train, hanging out on the east end of town. The rest of the train was left there so as not to block any grade crossing any town during this pickup move.

OMLX 419 and OMLX 413 are pulling back out onto the mainline after picking up several boxcars from an industry here in Holyoke. The town of Holyoke is one of the larger eastern Colorado towns. That isn't to suggest that it is large when compared to major metropolitan areas. Population of the town is around 2,300 people.

The conductor on this westbound manifest is protecting a shove...a reverse move...back toward the remainder of the train, out of frame to the left. The train had to pick up a few boxcars, and those cars are now being taken back to connect with the rest of the train.

One of the many great things about short line railroads is that many of them have not replaced these massive station name signs. Class 1 railroads often seem to replace these with smaller signs at either end of the station (or siding). But, not the case here in Holyoke, CO as a westbound manifest actually makes a reverse move to the east by the sign on the main track. If you look beneath the Holyoke sign, you can see the conductor, riding on the rear boxcar, protecting the reverse move back toward the remainder of the train.

Just west of the "downtown" area of Holyoke, I setup for a final shot of the Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado Railway for this trip. It was a very interesting operation and I was glad I took the time to check it out. It was really great watching (and listening) to a pair of spartan-cab SD40s work for the day.
