UP's MNYGJ, which usually runs west at night, happened to make a daylight appearance on the west slope as it meets an eastbound UP passenger special (currently tied down in the siding) at Fraser. I like this shot as you get a good overview of much of the town of Fraser, and see the Winter Park ski resort in the distance.

A UP passenger special is tied down in the siding here at Fraser. You can see the Fraser platform along the main, and the depot across the street in the background. The Winter Park Express had its last weekend last week, so the siding at Fraser was not in use.

If you haven't seen UP's newest "official" paint scheme yet, here it is! One thing you likely will immediately notice is that the wings have been removed from the nose in favor of the classic UP shield. My best guess is that the wings have been removed for monetary reasons, as the shield is much smaller. In any case, a pair of C44ACMs sit on the point of an eastbound passenger special, now tied down in the siding at Fraser. I was hoping for a side-by-side shot here with the eastbound Zephyr, but the Zephyr departed about 15 minutes earlier.

UP 6001 and UP 6909 are both recently rebuilt C44ACMs and have a fresh coat of paint. UP's latest paint scheme, specifically. The 12-car train is now tied down in the siding, and will remain here until Tuesday morning (about 40 hours) before it will proceed east toward Denver.

With its station stop at Fraser complete, the eastbound Zephyr is starting to roll east on the main. AMTK 100 and AMTK 25 lead the train as it approaches a green signal.

The Winter Park Express rolls west on the siding at Fraser, crossing Eisenhower Drive, one of the main roads in town. In truth, this is actually only the power for the Winter Park Express, which is running around the train and will attach to the train further west in the siding. The old Fraser Mercantile Company still stands and operates here in Fraser.

The Superliners for the Winter Park Express have been tied down on the siding at Fraser, and the power is running back east on the main so it can tie on to the train for the return trip to Denver. The Superliners have a basic battery backup, which can last 1-2 hours, although it cannot power everything on the car. Basic lighting is about all it provides. It is enough, as you can see, to power the red end markers on the coach that trailed for the trip west, but will be behind the power for the trip east.

The Zephyr has an incredibly colorful consist for the trip west today! AMTK 176, sporting the Phase 7 scheme, is leading AMTK 203, the Operation Lifesaver unit. Personally, I think the Operation Lifesaver unit is one of the most creative special schemes I've ever seen.

With its station stop at Fraser complete, the California Zephyr is quickly accelerating to continue the trip west. The Zephyr meets its cousin, the Winter Park Express, tied down in the siding here, waiting for its turn for the return trip back to Denver.

The westbound California Zephyr is at its station stop at Fraser, just about 10 minutes behind schedule. Fraser is a "fresh air" stop for the Zephyr. The train is usually stopped for right around 10 minutes here. Passengers can step off the train for some fresh mountain air, or to get a smoke break (if that's your thing).

The crew for the Winter Park Express has reassembled the train in the siding at Fraser. Since the California Zephyr does not make a stop at the Winter Park Resort (or the town itself) and only stops here at Fraser for both, this stop is considered to be the "Fraser / Winter Park" stop. There are free busses that run the four miles between Fraser and the town of Winter Park.

With the train now tied down and secured, the crew has gone off duty. They will remain off duty until around 3pm when they get the train prepped to pick up passengers at Fraser and then continue east.

I decided to stay out the sky and come down the ground for a low-level shot of the pair of P42DCs that are the current power on the Winter Park Express. Interestingly, for the first time in its history, the power for the Winter Park Express has been nothing but "standard" Phase 5 P42s all season. Every year prior to this, since Amtrak started the service, the train has had a less-common unit, such as a Phase 7 P42 or a heritage unit. Perhaps a sign that the train is indeed becoming a regular staple in Amtrak's seasonale schedule.

Power for the winter Park Express has just rolled by eastbound on the main. It has a clear signal at the east end. After going through the switch, DS-378 will align the siding switch (and derail switch on the siding), and the train will get a restricting signal to come back to the Superliners in the siding.

Two of the conductors on the Winter Park Express prepare the east end of the Superliners for the power to hook up to. Meanwhile, the power itself is being taken east on the main at Fraser. It will go out the east end of the block, and back into the siding from the east to hook up to the equipment. This is the daily shuffle the Winter Park Express must go through after dropping off all its passengers.

The Winter Park Express has just completed its station stop here at Fraser, about a dozen people hopping off the train , presumably to explore Fraser. The train is rolling west and will stop just west of the siding on the main track. It will then back into the siding. The power will detach from the train, run around the train on the main, the hook back up on the east end of the train for the return trip this aftenroon.
