Cane Creek (UP) Union Pacific
UP's Cane Creek Subdivision was built by Rio Grande in 1963, specifically to access the Potash plant near Moab. A weekly local, which runs out of Grand Junction on Fridays, brings empty covered hoppers to the plant and picks up loads. Here, an SD70M, a GP60, and two GP40Ns have 36 empties in tow along UT-191.

UP's Potash Local emerges from the 7,000-foot long tunnel on the Cane Creek Sub, entering into Bootlegger Canyon. This tunnel shaves off roughly eight miles that would be necessary to run around the rock formations that the road follows.

The Cane Creek Subdivision runs near both Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. Bootlegger Canyon, seen here, not only hosts the rails, but also Corona Arch (top left of the picture).

The Potash Local reaches the south end of Bootlegger Canyon, and wraps around the edge of the red rocks to rejoin the Colorado River for the remainder of the journey to Potash.

The people gathered in this shot, just outside a massive cut made in the red rocks to accommodate the rails, are not here for the train. The tracks cross the Corona Arch trailhead, with the arch being the attraction these folks are after. However, even a non-railfan sometimes enjoys stopping to watch a once-weekly train roll by on the tracks.

We are now a little over 31 miles south of the desert mainline (the Green River Subdivision) at Brendel. Another couple of miles and the Potash Local will reach its destination to switch out some cars.

The Potash local is slowing as it is approaching a switch at the north end of the Potash plant along UT-279 and the Colorado River.

Two of the four units from the Potash Local have cut away from the other two units and the remainder of the train. The crew is bringing these two units down to the string of 26 loaded cars that are ready to head back to Grand Junction. The crew will use these two units to start charging the air brakes on the loaded cars (whose hand brakes are still applied) while using the other two units to spot the incoming empties. This will help the crew to be able to depart back for Grand Junction sooner.

While two of the Potash Local's units sit on the outbound cars, charging the air line, the crew takes the 36 empties down the inbound track to be spotted at the industry for the Potash switcher to handle.

I can certainly think of worse views to take in while working than this! The Potash Local is pulling a string of 36 empty covered hoppers in near the Potash mine, a pair of GP40Ns currently in charge of the cars. Of note, UP 1540 was originally delivered to Western Pacific in April 1980 as WP 3550.

Very tragically, a forklift made contact with an overhead high voltage power line on November 10, 2018. Three men that worked for Intrepid Potash were electrocuted and, unfortunately, lost their lives in the accident. A very beautiful memorial to the three men has been erected by Intrepid Potash in 2020. The Potash Local slowly rolls by in the background, ready to spot a string of cars.

And overview of the tracks at Potash. 26 loaded outbound cars are sitting in the distance, a pair of units charging the air for the return trip to Grand Junction. Meanwhile, the crew of the local brings the 36 inbound empty cars to the south end of the facility.

With the outbound train blocking the opposite track at the north end, the crew of the Potash Local must bring in this string of inbound empties all the way to the south end of the tracks so the two GP40Ns can run light and cross back over to the clear track to the north.

The Potash Local has hauled the inbound 36 cars as far as they can. They will now cut the two GP40Ns away from the train, tying it down first, and then return to the outbound train at the north end of the facility.

This pretty much is as definitive "end of track" as you can have! The Cane Creek Subdivision comes to an abrupt end with a huge pile of red rocks and a sudden drop off at the south end of the Potash facility, 37.4 miles south of the mainline at Brendel.
