In addition to the tracks and the Colorado River, the canyon contains I-70. This was one of the final major pieces of the interstate system to be completed. The trees on the opposite side of the Colorado River were burned in the massive Grizzly Creek fire in August 2020. The fire consumed nearly 30,000 acres. However, the project proved to be too expensive, so it resulted in one very long siding, and three sidings overall in the canyon. Allen, toward the east end, is 14,250 feet long. Shoshone is very short at 3,960 feet, and almost connects to Allen, separated only by a short tunnel. At that time, it only had three tank cars. The train worked the industries at Lacy (in West Rifle), and picked up 18 covered hoppers. Passengers have about five minutes to step off the train here for a quick stretch. The engineer and conductor also change crews here. A Salt Lake City crew will board the train for the journey west across the Utah desert. The Denver crew, getting off the train, will stay in Grand Junction overnight and take tomorrow's eastbound train back to Denver.
