Alliance was once one of the largest facilities on Burlington Northern, and remains a major facility on BNSF today. Three subdivisions (the Angora to the South, the Butte to the northwest, and the Sand Hills Sub to the east. A lot of Powder River Coal trains run through Alliance. Here, BNSF 2026 leads an Employee Appreciate Special toward its stop in the yard.

A pair of ES44ACs, delivered as Tier-4 credit units in August of 2023, lead a coal empty into the south yard at Alliance. The train is ultimately headed for the Powder River for loading. It will run south on Angora to Bridgeport, then west on the Valley Sub toward the Orin Sub.

I was quite saddened to see that this (former) MRL SD70ACe had received quite a few tags on the conductors side. I can only assume that, since BNSF's takeover of MRL at the start of 2025, the unit has spent some time in some place like Southern California. Today, it is in the yard in Alliance.

This unit sand train was loaded on the Canadian National. when the train was handed over to BNSF, the CN power was kept on the train. Two units on the head end and a single DPU brings up the rear. The train has a fresh crew onboard and the train is departing the south end of Alliance toward the Angora Sub.

Loved the opportunity to get a shot of Canadian National units on a unit sand train. Do not get a lot of Canadian National power in Colorado, so seeing them here, just south of Alliance, NE on the Angora Sub was a nice treat.

While not as flat as eastern Nebraska, the Angora Sub south of Alliance definitely represents more of the plains than the Butte Sub north of Alliance. Here, a CN ES44AC brings up the end of this southbound loaded sand train.

While waiting for the 6pm departure of BNSF's Employee Appreciate Special from Alliance, I noticed a Heritage 1 "Goat Boat", so I had to grab a shot. The name "Goat Boat" has two origins. "Goat" comes from the fact that the original Heritage 1 paint scheme for BNSF is very similar to the Great Northern Railway, which is one of the railroads that merged together to from Burlington Northern in 1970. The Great Northern had a Mountain Goat in its herald. "Boat" comes from the old reference to GE locomotives as "U-Boats", from their early designations such as U30C.

BNSF has a massive maintenance facility in Alliance, NE, for both engines and railcars. Maintenance items that cannot be completed in Denver typically result in the engine or car being forwarded to Alliance. Prior to BNSF, Alliance was one of the largest maintenance facilities on Burlington Northern.
