As the westbound Zephyr heads out of Union Station, three RTD commuter rail trains are on the roll. On the far left, an A-Line train from Denver International Airport approaches Union Station. It is meeting an N-Line train that is headed out toward Thornton. On the right, above the Zephyr, a G-Line train is arriving from Arvada.

Denver Union Station is just a couple blocks away from Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. In this shot, as the westbound Zephyr is departing from Track 4, the train passes by the stadium. From this vantage point, you can see the grounds crew working on the infield.

Starting this season, the Rocky Mountaineer is actually loading and unloading passengers on Track 5 at Union Station. Here, the westbound Zephyr is on Track 4, nearly ready to depart. The Rocky Mountaineer is running a few minutes late, but is getting ready to depart as well.

Just west of Tunnel 1, the morning Zephyr is running about 45 minutes late. You can see Canyon Pines Drive, the road that accesses the new Arvada neighborhood of Canyon Pines. The neighborhood will have custom home builds, but several years into the project, no houses have actually popped up just yet.

The westbound Zephyr approaches the east portal Tunnel 1 above CO-72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. When the Denver and Salt Lake (or, at the time, the Denver, Northwestern, and Pacific) first started investigating routes to head west through The Rockies, Coal Creek Canyon was one of the routes surveyed. The route would have necessitated a 2-3 mile long tunnel. As such, the route along the Front Range and South Boulder Canyon, through the Tunnel District, was chosen instead. Today, of course, CO-72 heads west up Coal Creek Canyon.

This spring has been quite a bit cooler in the Denver area than the average area, and it certainly has been a wetter spring than on average. In May, 3.9" of rain fell in Arvada, nearly double the average of 2.2" for the month. The result has been the greening up of the area. The valley here at Blue Mountain Drive looks fantastic and alive as the morning Zephyr heads west.

Since COVID in 2020, the Zephyr has pretty consistently been running with a baggage car and seven Superliners. A few weeks ago, a third coach started appearing on the Zephyr, increasing the length of the train to eight Superliners. On this particular morning, as the Zephyr heads west on the main at Eisele (Clay), the train is a bit longer with nine Superliners in tow. Granted, the very last car is a sleeper that is just deadheading out to California.

The eastbound Zephyr is on the main at the south end of North Yard, alongside a lot of double stack containers in BNSF's Rennicks Yard. One of several thunderstorms has moved east and is continuing to drop a lot of rain on the eastern plains. The train is approaching an approach signal at Fox Jct.

A massive summer thunderstorm has passed through the area and is moving out onto the eastern plains. The sun is breaking through the clouds to the left, offering some great storm lighting as the eastbound Zephyr passes alongside North Yard and Rennicks, just about 15 minutes away from its station stop at Union Station.

The eastbound Zephyr departed Fraser almost an hour late, but made up about 45 minutes on the trip down the Moffat. Here, it is on the main, coming by North Yard (UP) and Rennicks (BNSF). Tracks 1-5 are all empty of cars this afternoon.

With the increased costs of transporting private passenger cars on Amtrak trains, it has become far less common for private cars to appear on the end of the Zephyr. However, on this evening, private cars "Colonial Crafts" and "NYC-3", the first in a Pennsylvania railroad scheme, and the second in a New York Central scheme, ride along on the back of the train.
