I've always been interested to try to get some shots from the east end of Bond. The west end is very accessible and pretty easy to shoot. The east end, however, is wrapped back around along the Colorado River, out of view from any roads. I was happy to finally have success on this afternoon with the eastbound Zephyr (led by a UP C44ACM) leaving the east end of Bond.

The eastbound Zephyr crosses over the west end of the Eagle River. The Eagle River merges with the Colorado River just to the right of frame. The mostly-idled Tennessee Pass follows the Eagle River east from Dotsero. Indeed, if you look closely, you can see one leg of the wye from the mainline, wrapping east toward the Tennessee Pass mainline. A UP C44ACM is leading the Zephyr this afternoon.

When both trains are on time (or equally late), the Zephyrs typically meet at either Range or Dotsero. However, with the eastbound Zephyr running about two hours late due to a power swap in Salt Lake City, the two trains are meeting here at Grizzly in Glenwood Canyon.

A nice look at Glenwood Canyon here at the (relatively short) siding of Grizzly. All three sidings in Glenwood Canyon (Allen, Shoshone, and Grizzly) have the mainline closer to the river and the siding closer to the mountain. The Zephyr here is on the main, but is slowing as it will meet the westbound Zephyr.

In August 2020, a wildfire named the Grizzly Creek Wildfire start in Glenwood Canyon and burned over 36,000 acres. You can still see some of the shrubs beneath the power of the eastbound Zephyr that suffered burn damage, as well as most of the slope to the right on the opposite side of the river as well. This afternoon, the California Zephyr has a UP unit giving it a hand. The train is on an Approach (yellow) signal on the main as it will be meeting its counterpart here at Grizzly.

A bit of a surprise on the eastbound Zephyr as a UP C44ACM leads AMTK 201 on the journey east through Glenwood Canyon at the west switch of Grizzly. The original Amtrak P42DC was removed in Salt Lake City and the UP unit was added, likely due to mechanical issues.

A westbound Union Pacific empty oil train heads west on the main at Tolland, meeting an eastbound BNSF loaded oil train that is waiting in the siding. The Winter Park Express ran around the UP oil train at Cliff. After meeting a coal load at Cliff, it was the oil trains turn to continue west.

The westbound Winter Park Express waits in the siding at Rollins, toward the east end, as the sole DPU on an eastbound coal train rolls by. After the coal train is clear, the Winter Park Express will back out the east end and then proceed west on the main track, around a BNSF manifest that is out of view toward the west end of the siding.

Following roughly an hour behind a westbound coal empty, the westbound Zephyr is making track speed as it kicks up a bit of fresh fallen snow dust at Leyden. Something else of note...if you look closely at the west house track switch on the siding, you'll note a chunk of track missing. UP took the west switch of the track out of service years ago. They removed the frog and spiked the switch.

Some snow is coming down here at Plain as a westbound coal empty passes by a few pieces of maintenance equipment in the house track. The elevation here at Plain is right around 6,800 feet (around 2,075 meters) above sea level. 1,000 feet of elevation makes a pretty big different in snowfall here.

A trio of GEs leads a westbound coal empty on the main at Rocky. Piles of used ties line the siding, waiting to be picked up. UP has been involved in a major maintenance project, replacing ties, tie plates, and ballast for the past several months. The project is finally nearly completion, save for a bit of cleanup work.

After the morning Winter Park Express rolled through, there was an unexpected bonus when this westbound coal empty highballed the east end of Rocky, following about 30 minutes behind the Winter Park Express.

Yard Shots Union Pacific
A UP yard crewman just started up the prime mover in SD40-2 #1957. It is taking several minutes for the unit to fully warm up and, as a result, a lot of white exhaust is currently being produced. Also of note in this shot in UP 1019, a GP60. For whatever reason, UP seems to utilize GP60s in California and Texas quite a bit. They don't show up in Colorado all that often.

Yard Shots Union Pacific
While waiting for the morning Zephyr, I got a shot of this C44ACM sitting near the fuel tracks in North Yard. This unit was originally a C44-9W, but UP rebuilt and converted it from DC traction motors to AC traction motors. The unit also sports UP's newest paint scheme.

Yard Shots Union Pacific
Like most Class 1 railroads today, Union Pacific has a lot of older units in long term storage. Many of them, including dozens of SD70Ms, are currently stored at 36th Street Yard in Denver. The units are waiting for one of three things. To just be reactivated and put back in service, to be rebuilt and put back in service, or be sold. Until one of those three things happens, here they will sit quietly and wait.
