The eastbound California Zephyr is rolling on clear signals about two miles east of Dotsero. The train is running on time as it heads down the Dotsero Cutoff toward Bond. Amtrak is taking advantage of the slow season (ridership is generally down in winter months) and is reducing long distanced trains to just six Superliners. This is allowing them to refurbish some of the cars. Interestingly, while they are doing this, the Lounge Car is being placed directly behind the baggage car. Generally, it is in the middle of the train next to the Dining Car.

Amtrak recently revived and restored their P40DCs for use in the fleet to assist the P42DCs that have been the standard for twenty years. Such was the case with the second unit on the eastbound Zephyr, seen here slowing for its station stop at Glenwood.

Snow-covered mountains make for a great background in Glenwood Springs as the eastbound California Zephyr slows in the east siding in preparation for its station stop.

The eastbound California Zephyr is less than ten minutes away from its station stop at Glenwood. Passengers are gathered on the platform, ready to board when the train arrives.

Range is an appropriate name for this siding located in the middle of an open range. The tracks are straight as an arrow through the entire siding!

I love this picture. It just seems to peaceful. The Zephyr is on the Dotsero cutoff here between Dotsero and Range, following along the Colorado River. What more really needs to be said!?

One of the best places in the world in my humble opinion! The Zephyr is on the east siding at Glenwood Springs, pulling in to the clear. You can see a group of people standing on the platform, ready to load up for the trip east.

Just east of the east switch of Lacy, the Zephyr is moving at track speeds in excess of 60 MPH as it hustles along in order to make its station stop in Glenwood Springs on time.

There is a canyon between Palisade, CO and De Beque, CO that is difficult to shoot in. That made me determined to find a place to stop and shoot! A quick hike up from the highway yielded this result of the Zephyr on the main at the siding of Tunnel.

When was the last time you purchased peaches at a Colorado grocery store? There is a good chance it came from Palisade, CO just east of Grand Junction. Here, the Zephyr passes the east switch of Palisade alongside some peach groves.

A pair of "triclops" SD60Ms charge west out of Lacy. This is the power from the Minturn Local (which of course hasn't gone to Minturn in decades), but is now headed back to Grand Junction.

Gone are the days when this view of the arriving Zephyr was dominated by F40PH's in Phase III paint! Now, it is Phase V P42DC's...but at least Amtrak is still around after 40 years.

The only train that we would see on our journey outside of the Zephyr was this light power move. The units here have actually reached their destination as they will go into the west siding at Glenwood and then into the yard. Eastbound coal loads coming out of Grand Junction will stop in Glenwood and cherry pick a few units of this string for mid-train helpers for the trip back east.

While Amtrak does have its own sign identifying the Glenwood Depot, the old Rio Grande signage has withstood the test of time, looking very good hanging along the depot platform.

The Amtrak sign along the station platform clearly indicates to passengers where they are! Presumably, this is more for the passengers on the arriving trains, as you'd hope the people already here know where they are...
