After de-training at Glenwood Springs, my oldest daughter Bella is "holding up the train", while my youngest, Jaina, does a happy dance as it was a long 6 hour ride!

On the Dotsero Cutoff between Bond and Dell, Amtrak 5 is quickly headed west at the maximum authorized speed. There has been several hours of maintenance out of the cutoff, but Amtrak will force some trains to start moving in the afternoon, making for some good chasing after the morning lull.

Just east of Dotsero on the Dotsero Cutoff, track and time has been given out to Maintenance of Way so they can work their magic to keep things running smoothly. This high railing piece of equipment is setting on the track with track and time between Range and Dotsero.

Two mainlines converge (or diverge, depending on your point of view) at this location. This coal load is coming from Grand Junction and is headed toward the Dotsero Cutoff and the Moffat Mainline. To the left is of course Tennessee Pass, now defunct for nearly ten years.

It is getting late in the day as this eastbound coal load moves quickly between the sidings of Dos and Lacy. Sometimes overcast skies can be used to your advantage. At this time of day, the sun would have horribly backlit this picture, possibly making it impossible to get.

The Minturn Local is about fifty cars long as it approaches the siding of Lacy. Some days, the local will make it as far as Gypsum on the Tennessee Pass Sub, but most days it only makes it as far as Lacy. There are several industries here that will be switched by the local. The train will enter the siding and the power will run around the train to perform the switching before heading back to Grand Junction.

After switching in Parachute about five miles away from the main line, the Minturn Local is backing down the branch toward the main. The train is currently backing over the I-70 Frontage Road, about to pass under I-70 itself.

The Minturn Local (on the right) meets an unloaded coal empty (on the left) at the siding of Grand Valley. The Minturn Local hasn't run to Minturn in many years, but the name has stayed with the train nontheless! The coal empty is headed for the mines at Somerset on the North Fork Branch.

For much of the trip between Grand Junction and Denver, the California Zephyr follows the Colorado River. In fact, the Zephyr follows the river through a total of six canyons. Here, the Zephyr is headed east as it passes through De Beque Canyon.

There are many Orchards in the town of Palisade, CO (about 11 miles east of Grand Junction). Amtrak 6 passes one such Orchard near the east end of Palisade siding.

While Amtrak 5 is running about an hour late, Amtrak 6 is running close to six hours late! Amtrak 5 (on the right) met its counterpart (on the left) at Clifton, a few miles east of Grand Junction. Amtrak 5 actually stopped briefly at Clifton to wait for Amtrak 6 to clear the station in Grand Junction.
