There are miles and miles of ties along the right-of-way as BNSF is investing roughly $140 million in the Brush Sub in 2015. In addition to tie replacement, BNSF is extending the sidings of Bijou, Crest, Hudson, Messex, Roggen, and Tonville. They will also start on projects to extend Barr, Keensburg, New Hillrose, and Wiggins, although those projects won't be completed until 2016. It has also been suggested that BNSF plans to add a second main track to some (or even all) of the Brush Sub in the next few years to increase fluidity on the line. As is common in so many plains towns, agricultural buildings can be found alongside the tracks. BNSF 5746 (leading the coal load) is a pre-production ES44AC; one of the first such units built. While this curve offers pretty descent shots any time of day, afternoon shots of westbounds are just about as ideal as you could ask for. Such is the case here, as this westbound coal load slowly pulls up the grade out of Keensburg. The train just met a manifest, and had to start pulling up the grade from a stop. I thought it was particularly fortuitous, catching this unit, as I have shot it a couple of times over the previous nine months in and around Denver. It is a great place for getting both eastbounds and westbounds. Case in point is this eastbound manifest, currently in dynamics as it heads down grade. The train is being led by a (recently) highly popular ES44C4. While BNSF management appears to love these units, word is that engineers are not so crazy about them. If you look carefully in the distance, you can see a train in the siding at Hudson. That is the Hudson Turn, a local which regularly switches out a large industry just northeast of town. The train was looking at a red signal at the west end of Irondale. Despite having my scanner turned on, I never did hear why the dispatcher was holding the train west of Irondale. BNSF has been aggressively buying ES44C4s very aggressively. They have nearly 1000 on their roster now. The ES44C4 only has four powered axles. It is an A1A-A1A unit. BNSF's ZDENCHI (Z-Train, Denver to Chicago) waits patiently in the siding for the late Zephyr to pass. The train also just crossed the "Quiet Zone" grade crossing at 104th Avenue, visible in the background. Note the "W" and "QZ" signs track side. The "W" indicating a grade crossing is coming up. the "QZ" indicating it is indeed a Quiet Zone and that no horn is necessary.
