The partly cloudy skies were playing havoc with the lighting for this shot of a military train at Limon, CO. Not too far in the distance is the interchange point between UP and the KYLE railroad, a short line that operates in western Kansas and eastern Colorado. Once upon a time, the KYLE trackage was owned by Rock Island.

Even though only two of the eight units in this shot are actually on, it still isn't very often you see so many units on a train these days! The six 40-series units being towed are: WP 7888, UP 3167, UP 9872, UP 8860, UP 3144 and WP 7901. (Incidentally, UP uses "WP" on units that are scheduled for retirement -- it does not represent a unit that was once on the Western Pacific roster!)

Looks like a whole lot of power for not much train. In reality, the first two units (an ES44AC and an SD70M) are the only two even on, let alone loading. The six 40-series units trailing may well be headed for a torch. They've all been stored in a "dead line" at Burnham for the past six months. By comparison, UP 7814 is one of the newest units on UP's roster, having been delivered on March 8, 2008 - just over one month before this shot was taken!
