As of this photo, UP's Limon Subdivision was operated with track warrants and isolated sections of ABS at the longer sidings. The shorter sidings - such as Cedar Point, seen here - are operated by hand throw switches and see use very infrequently.

The partly cloudy skies were playing havoc with the lighting for this shot of a military train at Limon, CO. Not too far in the distance is the interchange point between UP and the KYLE railroad, a short line that operates in western Kansas and eastern Colorado. Once upon a time, the KYLE trackage was owned by Rock Island.

A few miles east of Limon-proper find a special military train moving through this nice S-Curve off of US-40. This train is one of a total of six moving some military equipment from Kansas to California. Summer training must be coming up!

A few miles east of downtown Hugo, CO finds this military train charging west across a long, straight section of track. The train was carrying a mix of desert and forest camouflage equipment with all-EMD power in control.

In the (very) small town of Boyero, CO - about 10 miles northwest of Aroya - I caught up with this westbound military train. The train originated in Kansas and is headed for California (via Wyoming).

After getting a new crew at the siding of Byers, this 102-car loaded grain train is on the roll again toward Denver. The train is crossing the rather impressive trestle over Bijou Creek not far outside Byers.

I just happened to come across this customer special (symboled SKSSCW-11) just east of Denver on the Limon Subdivision. The train is carrying a component for an oil refinery. The component came from Houston, TX and is headed for Salt Lake City, UT.

Near the west switch of Sable, an eastbound coal load has a warrant to continue east to Mesa while a westbound sits in the hole. The conductor from UP 2426 is giving the coal train a roll by and preparing to throw the switch so the train can continue west toward the yard.

This westbound manifest is on the approach to the east switch of Mesa on the KP Line in eastern Aurora. Many of the boxcars on this train came from KYLE, a short line railroad in eastern Colorado and western Kansas.

Even though only two of the eight units in this shot are actually on, it still isn't very often you see so many units on a train these days! The six 40-series units being towed are: WP 7888, UP 3167, UP 9872, UP 8860, UP 3144 and WP 7901. (Incidentally, UP uses "WP" on units that are scheduled for retirement -- it does not represent a unit that was once on the Western Pacific roster!)

At Sable on the KP Line (near I-225), here are four of six units (all SD40-2s or SD40T-2s) are seen Dead-In-Consist on the MDVSI-13. The first unit in the shot was once DRGW 5407. the second unit was once SP 8266.

Looks like a whole lot of power for not much train. In reality, the first two units (an ES44AC and an SD70M) are the only two even on, let alone loading. The six 40-series units trailing may well be headed for a torch. They've all been stored in a "dead line" at Burnham for the past six months. By comparison, UP 7814 is one of the newest units on UP's roster, having been delivered on March 8, 2008 - just over one month before this shot was taken!
