Union Pacific runs a daily manifest between Denver and Salina, KS over the Limon Sub. This is the only regularly scheduled non-coal train that runs on the KP. Here, the westbound MSIDV is less than a mile away from UP's 36th Street Yard.

A military train on route from Yermo, CA to Fort Riley, KS heads east on the Limon Subdivision with an SD70ACe on the point. The crew on the train has been on since Speer, WY and is headed for Sable where a relief crew will take the train to Sharon Springs, KS.

With light almost gone in the western sky, this unit pipe train is entering the siding at Mesa to clear up for an eastbound coal load. Even though the Limon Sub operates under track warrants, there is an ABS island at both ends of Mesa, allowing the dispatcher to throw the switch, saving the crew quite a bit of time.

Light is fading quickly and the ISO on the camera is getting bumped up just as fast! This UP unit pipe train is being led by an all-BNSF consist. The BNSF units would ultimately be removed in Denver before the train continued west to Empire, CO on the Craig Branch.

Just west of Bennett, a unit UP pipe train is led by a good looking BNSF SD75I Warbonnet. A bit of pink is still holding on to the north as this shot was taken during the same minute as the sunset. The train is moving along US-36 near track speed, around 45 MPH.

Some of the recent rains are evident in a few pools on the ground as a unit pipe train rolls through Strasburg as the sun sets behind a large thundercloud.

A Union Pacific unit pipe train is being led by an all-BNSF consist (an SD75I, and SD75M and an ES44AC). The 49 flat cars of pipe are being taken to Empire, CO where an underground gas line is being built. The train is approaching the Wagner Street overpass in Strasburg.

This long lens shot turned out a smidge distorted, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to post a shot with planes, train and automobiles all in the same shot (that is, if you consider the military equipment "automobiles"!) ... The plain above is a FedEx cargo jet (an MD-11, to be exact) on final approach at Denver International Airport. The train, in the meantime, is preparing to tie down on the siding at Sable to await a recrew.

With only a few hours left to work and no new crew called, this military train is pulling into the siding at Sable to tie down in order to wait for a recrew. I chased this train about 115 miles across the Colorado plains, yet this was quite probably the best light I had the whole day!

I thought that a nice black and white shot was rather appropriate for this late-in-the-day shot of a special military train approaching a clear block at Mesa. Smith Road runs parallel to the track (on the left). Note the coal train tied down in the siding at Mesa, just over the horizon.

This military train, which originated from Sharon Springs earlier in the day, has just about completed its journey across the Colorado plains. The train is approaching the E-470 underpass as well as the siding of Mesa, where it has a clear signal.

Near Bennett, the track come through a long S-Curve and cross over a substantial trestle. Unfortunately, access to the trestle is limited. However, with a little bit of hiking along some ATV roads, you can find your way to this long-lens shot, great for westbounds coming across the bridge.

West of Byers, CO, the Limon Sub leaves US-40 in order to make a sweeping curve up a bit of a grade. Near the top of the grade, the tracks pass underneath I-70. This shot was taken near that underpass. The tail end of the train is just barely visible over the equipment a few cars behind the power.

A few miles west of Agate, CO and this military train is making good time on its journey west. The jointed rail through this section of track can lead to slower speeds, but the bigger problem is that 49 MPH is the maximum speed allowed in the US along unsignaled track.
