UP 1996 leads the MNYGR (Manifest, North Yard to Green River) across Broadway as it pulls through CP DS900. The train has picked up the rest of its train from Track 7, and needs to pick up its DPU next.

The conductor on UP 1996, leading the MNYGR, is doing a roll by on this yard job, pulling on to Bypass 2. Later in the day, the yard job will make a reverse moved, crossing over from Bypass 2 to Main 3, and then into North Yard.

A yard job, with three GP38-2 (or rebuilt as GP38Ns) and a GP60 lead up the job as it enters Bypass 2. After pulling down to C&S Junction, the yard job crew will be picked up and taken to Rolla (on the Greeley Sub) to "rescue" the MNPNY, where it sounds like their crew may have gone dead.

A yard job crosses the grade crossing at Broadway passes by an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal at CP DS900. Four units lead this yard job, with UP 822 (a GP38N). The unit was delivered as MP 2322 in July 1981.

A very long UP switch job, which has picked up some cars from the 36th Street Yard, is headed west across the 4-mile-long single track mainline known as the Belt Industrial Lead. Four units pull the train across Washington Street across Copeland Lake.

Manifests departing North Yard for the Greeley Sub frequently have to "double over" in the yard, meaning their train cannot fit on a single yard track, and instead is on two (or even more) tracks. The UP crew on the head end here is waiting at a red signal at CP DS900 (Broadway). The train must pull into the OS at Broadway in order to clear the needed yard switch at the back end. The problem is that a North Yard Switch Job is on the Belt Main, headed for Bypass 2, so the train here cannot go anywhere.

Yard Shots BNSF
A BNSF switch job, with a still-yellow-and-blue GP39-2, waits patiently at a red signal at Utah Jct. BNSF's tracks cross UP's Belt Lead at Utah Junction, and the diamond is controlled by Union Pacific DS-378. So, the BNSF crew is at the mercy of UP's dispatcher to allow them to cross the diamond to continue their switching.

At the north end of North Yard, the crew of the MNYGR works with a North Yard utility crew to put together their train. They just set out their DPU (visible in the distance), and are about to pick up the first half of their train, on Yard Track 9.

UP 7198 is one of two units, along with UP 5734 (just to the right) involved in a derailment on the North Fork Branch in December 2025. Union Pacific has finally gotten around to transporting the units east on the MGJNY, just west of Leyden in this shot. It is unclear what the ultimate fate of the units will be.

That left a mark! On December 3, 2025, UP 5734 was leading a coal empty on the North Fork Branch when the train struck a boulder on the tracks. The crew survived with relatively minor injuries. Not sure if UP 5734 will ultimately survive. It is finally being transported east from Grand Junction, but it is unclear if it will be repaired, or scrapped and written off.

UP 1997 and UP 1381 are both catching a ride on the MGJNY. They have likely been used as switchers in Grand Junction, and/or on locals that run out of the yard. They are most likely due for 92-day inspections in North Platte.

It is not super uncommon for UP's MGJNY to have a lot of units on the head end. However, generally speaking, most are not powered. In fact, of the nine units on the head end of the manifest here, only the lead unit is under power. There is also a single DPU on the tail end. The other eight units are being transported to North Platte (or beyond), for various reasons. The train is just west of Leyden here, under overcast skies.

Nine units lead the only manifest that Union Pacific still runs on the Moffat. The train passed a green signal at the intermediate at MP 14.6, seen in the distance in this shot. The lead unit, UP 6201, is missing its conductor's number board.

UP 7198 is missing a lot of its front end below the platform. The cab and long hood are banged up. This unit was involved in a derailment on the North Fork Branch, south of Grand Junction, on December 3, 2025.

On the evening of December 3, 2025, a coal empty headed for the West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch in western Colorado struck a large rock that had fallen on the track. Fortunately, there were no major injuries to the crew. The two units, however, were pretty banged up. Union Pacific is finally transporting the units to either be repaired or scrapped. Here, they were the 8th and 9th units on the head end of the MGJNY, seen here on the main at Eisele (Clay).
