In Colorado, the weather can shift from Summer to Winter overnight...literally! 24 hours before this picture was taken, it was 75 degrees out. On this day, the mercury in the thermometer didn't get over 30. UP's LDJ03 is switching on the main at Roydale.

At Ulster Street - also the former and possibly future location of Sandown Junction - this westbound coal empty has received word from 36th Street that the train can run around the wye at the yard and move toward the Belt Industrial Lead and the Bypass Track at North Yard.

A westbound coal empty, led by 6661, holds the siding at Mesa as the end helpers from a coal load on the main pass by, moving at track speed. The UP 7655 is an ES44AC, delivered to UP at the beginning of June, 2007.

The conductor from a westbound coal empty in the siding at Mesa gives a wave to an eastbound coal load moving at track speed on the mainline. The conductor will give the train a "roll-by", making sure there are no defects with any of the cars.

Some of the newest power to come out of Erie, PA has been slow to show up on coal power in Colorado. However, two days after Thanksgiving found this four month old ES44AC on a westbound coal empty, holding the siding at Mesa for a meet with an eastbound.

Snow-capped peaks offer a nice background for this eastbound coal load, moving quickly along on the main at Sable. The train has a warrant east toward Limon.

This is a scene that UP would stop tomorrow, if it were possible. This train is coming out of 36th Street on the Limon Subdivision. UP hopes that in the not-to-distant future, the CRIP (Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific) line between the Belt Industrial Lead and Sandown Junction will be restored. If and when that happens, coal trains will no longer traverse this section of track.

There is a nice long-lens shot offered at the east end of Mesa. The east end of Mesa is on quite a hill, and trains crest the hill from the west, appearing (seemingly) from out of nowhere! Snow has definitely found its way to the mountain peaks of the Continental Divide.

The Kansas Pacific (KP) Line - UP's Limon Subdivision - sees a lot of coal traffic. Most of the coal that comes off the Moffat runs on the KP. So, it is nice when something like a unit auto train comes rolling through every once in awhile! This empty auto train is on the move in between Sable and Mesa, heading east.

In the 70's and 80's, you could always count on Union Pacific for a unique power combination. A GP30 followed by a DD35B followed by an SD24, or some such lashup. Today, unique power is harder to come by. However, this GP40-2/GP60/GP38-2/GP38-2 lashup isn't too bad! UP's Roydale Local is getting ready for a full day of switching.

Sometimes the rain can be a pain when you are working to get some pictures of trains. Sometimes, on the other hand, it can really work to your advantage! There have been quite a few afternoon thunderstorms in the Denver area the last week or two, and the water is building up in places. Such is the case just west of Ulster Street as this loaded coal train heads east (away from the camera) for the KP line.

Afternoons in Colorado is often the time when severe weather moves into the state. This was the first time I'd taken any shots when it was hailing! This is the Roydale local heading back toward 36th Street with over 100 cars ready to be broken down and rebuilt into trains.

It is a pleasant day out on the KP line, which is still in need of some maintenance and upgrades. The track has a tendency to frequently switch between welded rail and jointed rail.

Nearly 70 miles east of Denver, this coal train has reached the small town of Agate. The siding here has been severed from the main at the east end, although there is still a derail in place. The train is now about 20 miles west of Limon.

The eastern plains of Colorado are great for telephoto shots. Even though the train itself is a minor component of this shot, I really like the overall picture. The train is moving along near track speed as it approaches the town of Strasburg. Cars and trucks cruise on by on Interstate 70 on the left side of the image.
