I love what a polarizer can do for a picture! With the behind the camera, the blue in the sky is very vibrant! Note that this coal empty has second generation power (CEFX 2802, a former UP SD40-2 and HLCX 5969, a former UP/CNW SD60)…and that's it!

CSX 50 is stopped at Ulster street, waiting for 36th street to grant permission for this coal empty to pass through the yard. It was quite a treat to find a train with pure CSX power, even if it was only two units!

Sitting tied down just outside 36th street yard on the Greeley Sub, I found this former Espee snoot nose tunnel motor. It is now a leaser unit with the reporting marks GECX 8359.

A derailment on the triple track main in Nebraska resulted in several trains being rerouted through Colorado. One such train was this unit [empty] auto rack train. In this shot, the train is on the approach to Mesa.

A roster shot of UP 8861 (ex-SP 8269) in the siding at Sable. This unit was patched by UP almost five years prior to this picture on June 12, 2001.

Sitting tied down in the siding at Sable, UP 8861 (a patched Espee SD40T-2) leads this extra intermodal train, which has been in the siding waiting for a new crew for nearly 36 hours!

Having just received a new track warrant from MP 590 to MP 570, UP 844 and crew cross over the East Bijou Creek just west of Deer Trail.

After taking on some more power (err, water that is), the train rested for several minutes in Strasburg for a quick check of all the systems. There were probably three dozen railfans around taking pictures.

UP 844 slows down in preparation to take on water in Strausburg. Even though most of the train is hidden by steam, I really liked the way the steam appeared to roll up the hill.

It was a chilly day out along the Limon Sub, which made for some excellent steam coming out of UP 844. Temperatures stayed in the 40's and 50's with scattered showers.

The man behind the controls leans out of the engine to take a look at the track up ahead. The passenger special will make a trip east in Kansas, then southwest into New Mexico, and east in Texas, then eventually back to Cheyenne over the course of the next month.

MP 634 is near the location of what was once Stapleton International Airport. This coal empty is working its way west on the last four miles of its track warrant. It will wind up on "Bypass One" and cut Pecos Street near North Yard.

Back when the Rock Island was still in existance, the railroad had trackage rights on the UP from Limon, CO to Sandown Junction, just east of Denver. From there, The Rock would takes its own tracks to the Belt Line to interchange with the Rio Grande in North Yard. Today, all that remains of Sandown Junction is this sign just east of Ulster Street along the KP main. However, it is rumored that the line from the Belt to Sandown will rise again to carry coal traffic!
