Just north of Longmont finds a pair of Amtrak P42s on the point of the Front Range Explorer excursion train. 14,259-foot Longs Peak, one of the 53 "14ers" in Colorado, stands tall in the distance.

The Flat Iron are just barely visible to the left as a very unique train makes an appearance on the BNSF Front Range Sub. This entire train is specially chartered for a trip from Dallas, TX to Chicago, IL via Denver, CO and Minot, ND.

High Iron Travels Front Range Explorer passenger train, a specially chartered excursion, heads north around Church Ranch Lake in Westminster. This pair of Amtrak P42s were leased, as were two Amtrak crews. There is a BNSF pilot in the cab to assist with the rules of the route, track warrants, etc.

This is a rare train running on rare miles. The train is part of a special charter by High Rail Travels. The special, called the Front Range Explorer, left Denver just after 7am and was headed for Gillette, WY to tie up for the night.
