UP seems to run an oil train on the Moffat at an average of about 1.5 oil trains per day at the moment. One such example is this westbound on the main at East Eisele (Clay).

A single SD70ACe brings up the tail end of this westbound oil train at the east switch of Eisele (Clay). There is currently no buffer car on the tail end of the train as there is no crew in the DPU.

Winter is making a push here during the first week of Spring. Fortunately, generally warmer weather is preventing much snow from accumulating along the main here between switches at Eisele (Clay) as a westbound oil train makes its way west. One of the two nose headlights is seemingly burned out on UP 7244.

A pair of AC400CWs lead a westbound oil empty around Big Ten Curve. The train is headed for the transload facility at Wash, near Wellington, UT. From there it will be loaded and either return east over the former Rio Grande, or possibly head west to Salt Lake City and then run over the Overland Route.

Clouds are hanging low on this Sunday morning, with cloud bottoms just barely above Eisele (Clay) as this westbound oil empty climbs the grade on the north edge of Big Ten Curve.

UP 7244 and train charge west out of Rocky, making the climb up toward Big Ten Curve. An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver, which is currently tied down, just barely cleared the west switch of Rocky. Engineers have a distance counter in the cab. When the head end was clear of the west switch, the engineer started the distance counter, counting down from the length of the entire train. When it reached zero, the engineer knew the DPUs were clear of the west switch.

Yard Shots Union Pacific
Helper continues to live up to its name, even in 2025. A dozen or so units idle away in the lower yard at Helper, waiting for their next assignment. Heavy westbounds, including oil trains and coal trains, still have manned helpers added to them for the 2.15% climb up Soldier Summit.

A fantastic-looking SD70M, UP 4190, is powered down and rests in the yard. Not sure if it is being stored, or if it simply waiting for some assignment, but it's been awhile since I've seen an SD70M sporting paint quite this pristine.

At least ten tanker trucks, each filled with oil, are transferring their content over to the oil tanks. From their, the oil will be loaded into tank cars to create unit oil trains to head east. A track working hyrailer switches around some tank cars in the foreground.

A little track crawling hyrailer moves tank cars around at the Price River Terminal Crude Oil Transload Facility near Wellington. This is where oil trains that run on the former Rio Grande are loaded, the oil transferred from truck to tank car.

UP's Potash Local swings away from the Colorado River and toward Bootlegger Canyon so it can reach Moab Tunnel cutting eight miles off the journey cars must travel to reach the same point on the north side. The canyon was cut out for the rails in 1963 when the Cane Creek Sub was originally constructed.
