As a result, mailboxes for the houses stand along the public section of the road. Whereas they normally stand in relative peace, the quiet is broken as a coal train rumbles east toward Denver. Other than some (relatively) light commercial zoning, most of the city is housing and neighborhoods. The Moffat cuts right through it, passing by roads, mailboxes, and trash cans! The result is a bit of smoke being generated from the brake shoes rubbing against the wheels. The train is leaving Leyden and approaching the grade crossing at Simms Street. This eastbound coal train is descending from Tunnel One, crossing over CO-72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, and headed for the detector at MP 22.6 and Blue Mountain Road crossing. I wanted to get this because this scene will likely be changing in the near future. The land behind the train in the distance has been annexed by the City of Arvada and approved for development! 90 single family homes are set to be built on the hillside in the distance! UP 2685 is an ET44AH and this angle offers a good look down the unit. You can clearly see the increased slope of the radiator housing at the back of the unit. The leader is an ET44AH. The unit is compliant with the Tier-4 emissions requirements put out by the EPA. The second unit is an ES44AC, which is compliant with the Tier-3 emissions requirements in effective up until January 1, 2016. Together they lead an eastbound coal load on the main at Cliff past some "stick track" laying on the ground near the east end of the house track. I actually shot this exact same coal train a few days earlier when it was empty and on its way west to the mine in West Elk! The train just crosses Carr Street and is now paralleling Oberon Road in Arvada. After a cold night, there is some morning frost clinging to the plants. This detector has a wire the runs up, across, and down around the track. The wire is the size of the smallest tunnel. If a car is too large to fit through a tunnel, it'll hit the wire and activate the detector. This ensure no cars will strike the inside of a tunnel. The train will take Bypass 2 in Denver and the three mid-train swing helpers will be cut out. A new crew will be called, and will take the train east on the KP and on to the great plains. The grade crossing at 66th Avenue now has quad crossing, but is not quite yet a quiet zone as testing is still ongoing with the crossing and surrounding stoplights.
