Mother Nature brought winter in the correct way along the Front Range with the first measurable snowfall in months falling overnight and in to the morning. A late Zephyr approaches the Blue Mountain grade crossing on its trip west in the winter wonderland.

The westbound Zephyr is running about 90 minutes late as it heads west out of Leyden. The train left Denver Union Station on time, but had two delays in the first seven miles of its trip west, neither being Amtrak's fault. The first problem was a Union Pacific freight train stuck in emergency at Utah Junction (on the diamond leading to the Belt). Took an hour for that train to get out of Amtrak's way. The second delay came in Arvada when the crew on the train contacted the dispatcher and requested police! Turns out there was a domestic dispute between a man and a woman and the woman needed to be removed from the train and taken in to custody.

Just west of Leyden, the Zephyr is moving at track speed through falling snow. About two inches of the white stuff fell overnight, and is continuing to fall off and on throughout the morning.

The first day of winter brought with it the most measurable snow the Denver-Metro has had since last winter! The westbound Zephyr is running about 90 minutes late due to a couple of issues getting out of town.

The majority of coal loads on the Moffat run in a 2x3x1 configuration. This train may be a bit heavier than most, however, as it is setup in a 2x3x2 configuration, with a pair of DPUs bringing up the rear. The train is crossing Olde Wadsworth Blvd in Arvada.

The westbound Zephyr makes its way through the narrowest part of Barbara's Gulch and toward Rocky. If you look in the distance, you'll notice an eastbound coal train coming around Big Ten Loop. The two trains will meet at Rocky, and because of the timing, neither will actually end up having to stop.

The Zephyr looks to be ramped up for holiday travellers! This time of year, the Zephyr typically only has six to seven Superliners on it. Five days before Christmas, however, and the train has nine Superliners. This includes four coaches, a sightseer, a diner, an three sleepers.

Running on a clear signal, the Zephyr is started to accelerate again after having to slow for the grade crossing at 80th Avenue. It was reported that there were some issues with the gates and, as such, the Zephyr had to slow to 15 MPH to ensure the crossing was clear of cars.
