Typically, UP coal trains on the Moffat run 3x2x1, but this train is different as it is not headed east on the KP. Instead, it is going to the Cherokee Power Plant in northeast Denver. That plant is close to converting entirely to natural gas. Once that happens, and this coal train stops running, it is rumored that the Energy Coal Mine may shut down. This sand train is one of two relatively new trains BNSF has been running on the Moffat. The other is a copper train. Lighting on this Friday afternoon was wreaking havoc on the exposure! The train is crossing over Tennyson Street. The temperature for this picture was already 65°F! Incredibly warm for Denver in the middle of February. Due to extreme weather in California this winter, I have had that chance twice in the past two weeks! The Zephyr that should have arrived Denver the night before is 14 hours late here as it charges east on Main 1. It will meet #5 at Pecos...DS-86 has already lined #5 west on Main 2 here. There were only two tracks (one of which was the Arvada siding) and the commuter rail bridge was nowhere near even being started yet. Now finished, the commuter rail line still awaits traffic as testing continues. Meanwhile, a very tardy #6 heads east on Main 1.
