I am always impressed that, nearly 30 years after the merger that created BNSF, there are still a few Warbonnets on the rails whose paint is actually still in really great shape. BNSF 766, the third unit on the Denver-Provo, is a great example. Granted this unit is actually lettered for BNSF, which means it happened after the merger in 1995, Warbonnets being lettered with BNSF only happened briefly after the merger.

BNSF 5201 leads the manifest on the main at the east switch of Eisele (Clay). Note the incredibly large radiator housing on the back of the second unit. These days, it is pretty common for the BNSF manifests on the Moffat to run with New Image, 3x2 power. This morning, the Heritage 2 and the Warbonnet offer a little variation.

BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest is pulling on the 2% grade west out of Rocky. Although it is not leading, seeing a Warbonnet on the train is a nice sight to see in 2024. Certainly wish it had been the leader, rather than the somewhat grungy Heritage 2 C44-9W that made the leader cut.

An early morning westbound pulls west on the main at Rocky by the switch to the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead. This time of year, when the days are longest, the sun is on the north side of the tracks here in the morning.

It was rumored that this morning's Denver-Provo might have a Warbonnet leading. Alas, when the train showed up here at 80th Avenue (near the east switch of Leyden), it turns out the Warbonnet was third on the head end. A slightly worn C44-9W in Heritage 2 and an ET44C4 lead the consist.

As this westbound oil empty throttles up at the east switch of Eisele (Clay), BNSF 9272 kicks up a lot of exhaust. Looks like a GE or Alco unit!

With a clear (green) signal set up for BNSF 5804 and train at east Eisele (Clay), the crew can take a look at the tail end of the oil train, with a buffer car hanging out on the end.

Just east of the east switch of Eisele (Clay), BNSF 5804 is looking at a red signal as DS-78 attempts to get the switch aligned for the main. The view here offers a nice shot of the Denver Skyline off in the distance. The train left BNSF's yard right next to downtown not quite an hour ago.

BNSF 5804 is slowing to a stop at a red signal at the east end of Eisele (Clay). The switch is aligned for the siding and showing out of correspondence. DS-78 will try to get the switched locked up for the main. If you are not familiar with the terrain and are wondering about the tank cars in the distance, that is indeed the back part of the train as it wraps around Big Ten Curve. The crew can see the back of the train from this spot.

Two SD70ACes do their best Alco impressions as the units throttle up on the climb up Big Ten Loop. The units will like be redistributed in a 3x3 configuration for the trip back east over the Moffat after loading in Utah.

UP 5804 leads an 86 car oil empty west on the Moffat, on the climb toward Big Ten out of Rocky. You can see the buffer car on the tail end of the train in the distance on the right side of the frame.

The head end of BNSF's Provo-Denver passes by the graffiti-covered hoppers that serve as a wind break on the inside of Big Ten Curve. The matched paint schemes and elephant style arrangement look really fantastic.

The familiar face of a GE...the same basic face of all GEs for the past three decades...leads an eastbound manifest out of the east end of Clay (Eisele). The train, which is close to 6,000 feet long, will wrap around Big Ten and continue down to Rocky and on in to Denver.
