Belt Industrial Lead (UP) San Louis and Rio Grande
I hadn't seen this unit since December 2009 when it first showed up on the San Luis and Rio Grande. It was originally going to be used as power on the failed reboot of the Ski Train. You may recall that the SLRG already had tickets sold for a new version of the Ski Train. But the train never left the station due to a dispute with Amtrak. This (and another) SD9043MAC instead spent several years in normal service on the SLRG. With the lease now up, the unit is being returned to CIT Leasing.

For the past several years, the San Luis and Rio Grande has leased a couple of SD9043MACs from CIT Leasing. The lease on the units expired and, as a result, the SLRG is returning the units to the leaser. I had a suspicious, when taking these shots, that these would be the last SD90s I would see.

UP recently changed the days and times certain manifests are called at North Yard. Now, the MNYRO (Manifest, North Yard to Roper, UT) is called at 14:00 (2pm) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and the MNYNP (Manifest, North Yard to North Platte, NE) is called at 14:00 on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Here, the MNYNP passes through the OS at Broadway on the Belt Line, just outside North Yard.

A relatively new SD70AH is third out on this days MNYNP (Manifest, North Yard to North Platte). The SD70AH weighs 7,000 pounds more than a standard SD70ACe. The "H" in SD70AH represents "Heavy". UP ordered these units (with their extra steel) to put down more weight on the rails and increase their tractive effort.

I always enjoy running across a Kansas City Southern unit. I think it may be due to the fact that KCS has managed to endure through all of the mega-mergers of the last 20 years. While railroads like SP, CNW, and Conrail have fallen, KCS has persisted.

A quartet of units, including a borrowed Kansas City Southern AC4400CW, lead up the daily MNYNP. This train departs out of North Yard in Denver and run to North Platte, NE. This manifest (and its counterpart), are typically the longest manifests that UP runs in to and out of Denver. In this shot, the train is approach UP Junction at the east end of the Belt Industrial Lead. The train will swing north and join with the Greeley Subdivision for the first leg of the journey north to Cheyenne, WY.

An Xcel Energy coal empty comes across the Belt Line headed for North Yard under somewhat glorious, partly cloudy skies. With Xcel Energy making a push to move from coal to natural gas, the days for these hoppers may well be numbered.

The Belt Industrial Lead (or simply "Belt Line") was used by Rio Grande to interchange with Rock Island and Union Pacific. Now, it is used by Union Pacific for all coal loads headed north or east out of Denver. Or, as in this case, coal empties coming in from the north or east. Manifests use the Belt Line as well, but coal trains are certainly more common. This coal empty is approaching Broadway and the line in to North Yard. The highway in the background is I-25.

UP 7709 is pulling an empty train of coal hoppers out of Xcel Energy's Cherokee power plant. This is a scene that, supposedly, will not be reproducible by the end of 2014. Xcel is in the process of converting the Cherokee plant to run exclusively on natural gas. Once complete, UP will be losing a major coal customer in Denver!

After picking up a train of empty coal hoppers at Xcel's Cherokee Power Plant in northeast Denver, the crew on this "Public Service" train is headed for North Yard. Upon arriving, swing power will be added as well as power to the rear end and it will depart west for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch.

Okay, who notices something a little strange about this particular picture. Something odd about the power on this loaded coal train. The four units on the point? Well, that is a little unusual? More unusual is the fact that there is an SD70M in the consist. That SD70M has DC traction motors...something that you almost never find on coal trains in the 21st century! The SD70M was added in Grand Junction, although for what reason, I'm not sure.

It is a beautiful morning as the Ringling Brothers "Red Train" rolls through Denver. The circus was just in Colorado Springs (ending the night before) and the train is passing through Denver on its way to Las Vegas, NV. It will be back in Denver at the end of September and beginning of October, when the circus is actually in town.
