The westbound Zephyr crosses over Wadsworth Blvd in the heart of the Denver suburb of Arvada. There are actually two bridges crossing Wadsworth here. Wadsworth here was originally four lanes. A project to widen the road to six lanes in 1995 required a new bridge be built for a shoofly for the tracks. Afterward, the old bridge was torn down and a second bridge was built. Once complete, the shoofly was removed. Now, nearly 30 years later, the second bridge remains. Unused.

The Rocky Mountaineer GP40-3s are currently undergoing some maintenance as they've had some issues earlier at the start of the season. In the meantime, a pair of SD70Ms leads the passenger train west across Bypass 2 at Broadway.

The Rocky Mountaineer, with a pair of SD70Ms for power, approaches a clear (green) signal at Pecos. The train is currently on Bypass 2, which directly connects the Moffat with the Belt Industrial Lead. Main 3 and the North Yard Siding are just visible in the lower portion of the shot.

At the north end of North Yard, there is a large Cargill grain elevator that is still in operation. The elevator parallels the "Storage Yard". A yard generally used for storage at the north end of the yard. A yard job is on the North Yard siding, switching out cars.

A yard crew is switching cars at the north end of North Yard. Due to the length of the cars being switched, the yard job has passed through Utah Jct and come out on to the CTC-controlled North Yard Siding. The yard job is currently pushing cars back in to the yard on Track 1.

One of the only remaining set of classic Rio Grande signals are on a signal bridge at Utah Jct. The signal on the left is on the Main and the signal on the right is on the North Yard Siding. Both signals protect the entry in to North Yard and the diamond where the Belt Industrial Lead crosses the Main. A yard job is backing in to the yard, switching cars.

UP's eastbound MGJNY (Manifest, Grand Jct to North Yard) is stopped on the main just west of the signal bridge at Utah Jct. Meanwhile, a yard job has pulled out of North Yard, on the North Yard Siding. The yard job is currently blocking the entrance into North Yard, hence to necessity for the manifest to hold out on the main.

A GP40-2 and an SD40-2 lead a yard job back under the classic signal bridge at Utah Jct, shoving a string of covered hoppers in to North Yard. UP 1502 was built in in May 1971 as a GP40 for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O 3776). It was later sold to Espee, becoming SP 7124, before eventually being rebuilt to Dash-2 specs and falling to UP ownership. Looking good for being 52 years old!

Although there is no train present, the interlocking at Utah Jct is a fascinating one. In addition to being the north end of North Yard, the main track for UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub and the main track for BNSF's Front Range Sub both cross UP's Belt Industrial Lead which leads to UP's Greeley Sub. A crazy number of tracks, switches, and signals are at this control point. Here, a red signal protects the diamond where BNSF's Front Range Sub and UP's Belt Industrial Lead cross. The signals are controlled by UP's dispatcher in Omaha, NE.
