The westbound Rocky Mountaineer is starting its overnight trip to Moab, UT. When first departing Denver, the Mountaineer has to pass through a rather industrial part of the Denver area as it crosses the Belt Industrial Lead.

This coal train was loaded at the West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch. It ran over the Moffat at night, but had a new crew called in Denver for 7:15am. Here, the crew has the train rolling east at York Street on the Belt Industrial Lead.

This is rather rare mileage for the California Zephyr. The train is on the four mile long Belt Industrial Lead that connects North Yard and the Moffat to the Greeley Sub. The Zephyr crosses over York Street on a bridge with "Rio Grande" fly letters still visible on it!

The California Zephyr is passing by Xcel Energy's Cherokee Power Plant in northeast Denver. For decades, this power plant has been powered by coal. However, Xcel is nearly done converting it to run on natural gas. The two white stacks to the left are new, and part of the gas-burning portion of the plant. The stack to the right are older and part of the coal-burning portion of the plant. The Zephyr, incidentally, is here because it is detouring through Wyoming.

The westbound Zephyr is currently headed east on the Belt Industrial Lead. With the Moffat closed, the Zephyr is detouring through Wyoming, and the Belt Line is the connection from the Moffat (at North Yard) to the UP Greeley Sub.

With it switching nearly completed, the MNYNP sits just past the signal at Broadway on the Belt Industrial Lead. The engineer will wait here for a van to bring the conductor up to the headend. Upon his arrival and a final air test, the train will head east on the Belt Industrial Lead and then turn north on UP's Greeley Sub.

Today's MNYNP will have an all-EMD consist, including a pair of Norfolk Southern units being borrowed by UP. The unit featured in this shot is an SD70M-2. Even though EMD released them at the start of 2005, I've seen fewer than a dozen in the last 11 years. Neither UP nor BNSF bought any, so they don't show up in Colorado too often.

UP's MNYNP is shuffling some cars around in North Yard before it can head north toward Cheyenne. In order to have enough room to switch cars around over a few tracks, it actually enters the Belt Industrial Lead. My favorite type of engine since the GP60 will be leading the train - an SD70M with flared radiators.

Two of three SLRG SD90s on the MNYNP can be see here as the train slowly passes through Broadway on the Belt Line. The lease on the units is up and they are now headed back to CIT Leasing. These beasts have been interesting to witness over the last 18 years.

The SD90 seems akin to the DDA40X in some regards. Both were intended to be high horsepower units and neither was successful over the long term. UP had shed its roster of SD9043MACs. With the lease from CIT Leasing up, the San Luis and Rio Grande is also doing the same. Three SD9043MACs are on UP's MNYNP, headed for North Platte, NE.

One of a handful of SD9043MACs that the San Luis and Rio Grande had been leasing for the last few years is now being returned to the leaser. The particular unit has SLRG reporting marks, but is in an Iowa Pacific paint scheme. Iowa Pacific is the holding company for the SLRG.

I hadn't seen this unit since December 2009 when it first showed up on the San Luis and Rio Grande. It was originally going to be used as power on the failed reboot of the Ski Train. You may recall that the SLRG already had tickets sold for a new version of the Ski Train. But the train never left the station due to a dispute with Amtrak. This (and another) SD9043MAC instead spent several years in normal service on the SLRG. With the lease now up, the unit is being returned to CIT Leasing.

For the past several years, the San Luis and Rio Grande has leased a couple of SD9043MACs from CIT Leasing. The lease on the units expired and, as a result, the SLRG is returning the units to the leaser. I had a suspicious, when taking these shots, that these would be the last SD90s I would see.

UP recently changed the days and times certain manifests are called at North Yard. Now, the MNYRO (Manifest, North Yard to Roper, UT) is called at 14:00 (2pm) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and the MNYNP (Manifest, North Yard to North Platte, NE) is called at 14:00 on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Here, the MNYNP passes through the OS at Broadway on the Belt Line, just outside North Yard.
