Just over an hour before sunset, UP's Limon Local has arrived in Limon. It has come to a stop on the main, and the conductor will soon hop off and throw the switch that leads from UP's Limon Sub over to the KYLE railroad.

At the start of Golden Hour, UP's Limon Local passes the west switch of Cedar Point, roughly ten miles west of Limon. While I am not complaining about the opportunity to chase a train on the Limon Sub, it would have been great if the ES44AC had been left behind and the train had run with just the pair of SD40-2.

The Limon Subdivision used to see a lot of traffic in the early 2000s. Coal trains coming from or headed to mines in Western Colorado, during the height of coal, would run on the Limon Sub. These days, the eastern mainline has all but been deserted. The Limon Local makes periodic trips from Denver to Limon. There is an occasional oil train, but most of the UP oil trains run on the Overland. There's also a grain train from time-to-time, but otherwise, not much runs out here. You could easily spend an entire day trackside and not see anything moving. Fortunately, I was able to catch the Limon Local this afternoon as it heads east, just west of Agate.

East of Denver, I-70 follows the Limon Subdivision pretty closely until the town of Limon, at which point the track turn southeast and follow US-287. Here, just west of Agate, we get a shot of a 40-car Limon Local, following along the interstate.

It has been quite awhile since I've chased anything on the Limon Sub, mainly because trains run so incredibly infrequently. I was happy to have the opportunity to get a shot of the Limon Local as it crosses West Bijou Creek, which is completely dry at the moment. The west half of this bridge was rebuilt a little over five years ago. The blocky concrete bridge is the result of the rebuild.

Just east of Bennett, on the Limon Subdivision, The Limon Local crosses a long trestle that runs over Kiowa Creek. The creek is almost entirely dried up most of the year, with August being no exception.

The crew on the Limon Local has assembled its train after picking up cars here at Roydale. The train is now out on Main 1, waiting for the dispatcher to set up a signal for the train to continue east.

When RTD wanted to build a commuter rail from Union Station to Denver International Airport, RTD purchased some of the right-of-way that UP owned between 36th Street and east between Sable and Mesa. With the proceeds from the sale, UP installed CTC on the west end of the Limon Sub, and added a second main track to the far west end as well.

The engineer and conductor on the Limon Local are working to pick up a pair of SD40-2s and the first few cars for the trip east to Limon. The engineer had to retrieve an MU cable to connect the ES44AC to the SD40-2. The conductor is getting ready to knock off hand brakes.

UP 4014 back up west on the Limon Sub, running around the south leg of the wye, entering into UP's 36th Street Yard. It has to run around this wye so it can head back north to the UP Jct and run west across the Belt Line. Unfortunately, the north leg of the wye at UP Jct is too tight, so the Big Boy cannot run around it.

Right at Pullman Jct, UP 1616 passes by as UP 4014 and the passenger special make a reverse move from the Limon Subdivision back into 36th Street Yard. The train has wyed so it will be pointed north. UP 1616 was originally UP 4015, which had been paired with UP 4014 since it was restored to operation. Same unit now, just a new number and paint scheme!

Three GEs lead a loaded unit oil train east toward the plains of eastern Colorado on the KP. Of interest, the first two units are both former Espee units! UP 6360 was originally SP 316, delivered in July 1995 and patched to UP on August 1, 2003. UP 6344 was originally SP 298, also delivered in July 1995. It was patched to UP on January 18, 2002.

This loaded oil train is headed east on the main alongside the nearly-9,000 foot long siding of Mesa in Aurora on the KP. After a couple of snow storms hit the week before, the peaks of the Rockies are now pretty well covered in snow off in the distance.
