Just east of Cedar Point, UP 4014 and UP 4015 lead UP's annual steam train excursion on the seldom-used Limon Sub, parallel to I-70.

This aerial view of the small town of Hugo, CO really exemplifies just how much of a crowd UP's steam trains draw in! Cars are lined on both sides of US-287 through the town. I saw plenty of license plates from Kansas and Utah as railfans and steam fans (who are not necessarily railfans otherwise) made the trek to check it out.

Unsure of exactly where Big Boy UP 4014 would stop, people walk along the tracks from the left to gather around the engine to marvel at the impressive machine, take pictures, or maybe get that selfie they've wanted!

No matter where it goes, how large or small the town is, or how far away from major population centers, UP's steam engines always draw an impressive crowd! The town of Hugo is flooded with steam enthusiasts. So much so that local police were conducting traffic control at intersection is the typically sleepy town. The train is stopped here for a 30 minute photo op.

The UP Steam Crew bring UP 4014 to a stop for a 30 minute break and photo op in the small town of Hugo, CO. UP 4014 is getting close to the end of a month-long tour that took it from Cheyenne to New Orleans and now back.

An eastbound empty autorack train crosses over Agate Creek on the eastern Colorado plains. The train is the last non-grain, non-Limon Local train that will be on the KP line for the foreseeable future. The autoracks are going in to storage on the main at Jim, along with two other strings of autoracks that will be stored on both the main and siding at Jim, blocking the KP as a through route. Traffic heading east out of Denver will now have to go north to Cheyenne and east on the Overland.

That's a lot of autoracks! Union Pacific has made the decision to no longer use the KP as a through route. Due to the current downturn in the economy, a lot of cars are heading for storage. The siding at Byers has a string of autoracks stored in it. Agate has spine cars stored, and Buick has well cars stored. The cars on this train will be stored on the main at Jim, between Cheyenne Wells and Sharon Springs. The only trains the KP will see for the foreseeable future will be the Limon Local and an occasional grain shuttle to either Byers or Cheyenne Wells.

From high above, an eastbound empty grain train descends down the hill from Cedar Point. If you look very closely in the top-right portion of the picture, you will see hat Cedar Point has in fact had its east switch removed and it is now a (roughly) 5,000-foot-long stub track, occasionally used for storage. An 18-wheeler is also making its way east on I-70 off in the distance.

It is a beautiful spring day on the eastern Colorado plains. 24 hours after taking this picture, the scene would be radically different, covered in snow, as a spring blizzard moves in overnight. This train originated from Eagle Pass, TX and is heading to Cheyenne Wells, a city about 18 miles west of the Kansas border.

An AC4400CW with a fairly fresh coat of paint, sporting some wings on the nose, rounds the bend near the west end of Cedar Point. This siding, which is under 5,000 feet long, really is not even a siding anymore after UP removed the east switch a few years ago. It is now a stub train just under 5,000 feet in length.

A single ES44AC is crossing over West Bijou Creek, which actually does have a little bit of water running in it right now. The grain empty is heading for Cheyenne Wells in eastern Colorado.

An eastbound empty grain train crosses over West Bijou Creek just west of Byers on its way east toward Cheyenne Wells. Once there, the train will tie down in the siding and the power will return to Denver. The train came from Eagle Pass, TX, went up to Topeka, KS, then made its way over the Overland to Cheyenne, back south to Denver, and east.

After stopping at Roydale to drop off some passengers, UP 4014 is now crossing Sand Creek on Main 1 parallel to RTD's A-Line that runs out to Denver International Airport. The train will head to North Yard to tie up for the night before returning to Cheyenne the next day.
