Here at 5:07pm, the head of the eastbound Zephyr is just about to head into shadows as it descends from Big Ten Curve. Another month, with the loss of Daylight Savings Time, and the eastbound Zephyr will be running in darkness in to Denver.

It is a crystal clear morning as the standard pair of P42DCs lead the westbound Zephyr toward the east portal of Tunnel 1. This location is a pretty common spot for pictures of the morning Zephyr. Largely because it is one place where you can get fantastic lighting on the train in the morning.

Both the Evelyn A. Henry and Warren R. Henry are on the back of the California Zephyr this morning after having been picked up at Denver Union Station. The cars just came through on the westbound Zephyr a three months ago in June, but after a bit of additional traveling around, they are here once again!

AMTK 187 and AMTK 13 lead the westbound Zephyr around the eastern edge of Big Ten Curve. On the back of the train, both the Evelyn A. Henry and Warren R. Henry are catching a ride. The Zephyr is running a bit late this morning. The Rocky Mountaineer actually departed Denver first, but held up at Arvada to let the Zephyr by first.

Passengers aboard the Zephyr are no doubt really enjoying the trip west this morning! Fall colors are about their peak brilliance as the Zephyr charges west toward a green signal at the east end of Tolland. There is barely a cloud in the sky this morning. Couldn't ask for better conditions.

Running right on schedule, the westbound Zephyr follows along South Boulder Creek, the head actually crossing over the creek here between Rollins and Tolland. Fall colors above 8,000 feet or so are really reaching their peak.

A Phase 7 P42DC, AMTK 187, leads the eastbound California Zephyr out the east end of East Portal amidst a beautiful, vibrant sea of fall colors. The sun managed to peak out from mostly cloudy skies just in time to light the scene to perfection.

Near the west end of Tolland, deciduous trees line both sides of the rails (the main and the siding). As the westbound Zephyr has just overtaken a UP oil can (out of view behind the curve) and is approach a clear (green) signal at the west end as it passes by trees that are at their peak fall colors. If you wonder why Rio Grande used "Aspen Gold" as its main color, this shot says it all!
