The westbound Rocky Mountaineer is between Tolland and East Portal. For that past several months, the Mountaineer has been running with some leased UP SD70Ms while work was done on the GP40-3s. As you can see, the GP40-3s are back on the train, looking sharp matching the passenger cars.

Fall colors are just barely starting to show at Tolland as the Sunday Rocky Mountaineer crosses the grade crossing at Tolland on its journey west. It is so fantastic having such a unique passenger operation running on the Moffat. After losing the American Orient Express (later the Grande Luxe Express), the Ansco Ski Train, and the Circus Train, it is great having something diverse still running.

The Rocky Mountaineer GP40-3s look really good on the point of the "Rockies to the Red Rocks" Mountaineer as it approaches the grade crossing at Tolland.

The landscape around Tunnel 1, three days in to September, is actually quite green still. Within the next month, the terrain should really start to transform with fall colors. At least, in the areas where fall colors are applicable with deciduous trees.

The westbound Rocky Mountaineer rounds the curve toward the east portal of Tunnel 1 as it continues its journey to Glenwood Springs. Once there, the train will stop overnight and passengers will sleep at the Hotel Denver. Tomorrow, it will continue to Moab, UT.

This scene has changed significantly in the past year, and is going to continue to change in the coming year. UP 4927 leads the westbound Rocky Mountaineer up the grade toward Tunnel 1. In the background, preparation continues for the construction of the Canyon Pines subdivision, a new neighborhood of single family homes.

Just east of the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Road, the Rocky Mountaineer slowly makes its way west. Even though the train is over an hour later than normal, it is still rolling slowly west, giving its passengers the opportunity to enjoy the Colorado scenery outside the train.

A pair of UP SD70Ms pass underneath the still-standing signal bridge with classic searchlight signals on it at Utah Jct. The standard Rocky Mountaineer power is currently be worked on, so UP has leased the SD70Ms as substitute power. To UP's credit, they found some very clean and nice looking SD70Ms.

After a rare move that saw the Rocky Mountaineer back down the Belt Line and in to North Yard, the train is now moving forward again, pulling out of North Yard and crossing over the North Yard siding to Main 3 for the trip west over the Moffat to Moab.

Yard Shots Rocky Mountaineer, Union Pacific
Once upon a time, the Belt Line was used by Rock Island to bring trains from east on the plains to North Yard to interchange with Rio Grande. Today, the Belt and North Yard are, of course, owned by UP. The Rocky Mountaineer, is a rare move, is backing off the Belt Line and in to North Yard so it can depart west toward the Moffat on Main 3. Typically, the train would just cross Bypass 1 or 2 westbound, but both Bypass tracks were blocked, necessitating the rare move.

In a very rare move, the Rocky Mountaineer has backed across the Belt Lead to Broadway. Bypass 1 and 2 both have trains on them, so the Mountaineer has to back in to North Yard and then depart westbound on Main 3.

For the previous two months, The Rocky Mountaineer has only making a single trip per week from Denver out to Moab and back. However, with fall rapidly approaching, the train has once again started up twice-weekly service. The Mountaineer power is still in the shop, so a pair of (Phase 2) SD70Ms are being used for power.
