A UP crew works to get the head end power on this loaded oil train linked with the DPUs on the tail end. The crew brought the five units to Wash from Helper and put them together on the train. Once the link is complete and the air test is done, the train will depart east toward the Utah desert.

A single DPU brings up the tail end of a long, loaded ballast train. The train just received a fresh crew at Helper and is now making its way to Grand Junction, most likely to help shore up the line around Glenwood Canyon, which has been hit hard by rock and mud slides in the runoff this spring.

Most of the oil trains that run on the Moffat these days are headed to (if empty) or coming from (if loaded) this transloading facility located off the siding at Wash on the eastern edge of the town of Wellington, UT. You can see there are multiple tracks for loading oil in to tank cars here. On the siding at Wash on the left side of the shot, a BNSF manifest sits with the head end power detached. The head end power is dropping off four tank cars here at the facility.

In the siding of Wash, BNSF cuts the first four cars, all tank cars, away from the rest of the train. The tank cars will be spotted at the oil transload facility located here at Wash. After setting out the tank cars, the crew will put the train back together and continue west.

Amtrak 6 met the westbound Denver to Provo trackage rights train at the siding of Wash in the town of Wellington, UT. The sidings of Wellington and Wash lay right on top of one another. You can see the signals in the distance with the west switch of Wash leading directly into the east switch of Wellington.

At this lonely grade crossing in the middle of the Utah desert, a cross buck and a stop sign do their best to protect the tracks. Granted, they do their job considering the low number of cars and trains that pass through in a day! The moon shines brightly in the southern sky in the distance.

In the desert in between Wash and Mounds, the rails reflect the fading light in the western sky. Unfortunately, the rails in the desert are empty far more than they were twenty years ago under the Rio Grande.

The heavy rains have created some very lush plants on the desert floor! Grande Tunnel Motors 5390 and 5371 (along with UP 7060) lead the eastbound Dirt Train out of the siding of Wash towards Mounds and the Sunnyside Subdivision.

The dirt train is not making a run all the way to Sunnyside on this particular day. Instead, the Rio Grande tunnel motors will drop off the cars for the dirt train on the siding at Wash for temporary storage. After leaving the cars behind, the tunnel motors will run back to Helper light.

Four Rio Grande SD40T-2s lead the so-called "Dirt Train" eastbound just east of the siding of Wash near Wellington, UT. The Dirt Train actually carries trash from the Salt Lake City area to a landfill on the Sunnyside Subdivision in the Utah desert.
