Guess what unit made its way to Ogden in August 2009? Our old friend DRGW 5371, the only un-patched Rio Grande unit on Union Pacific's roster before being retired. It had been in Cheyenne, WY for over year, but has been moved to the Utah State Railway Museum. Union Pacific donated the unit to the museum.

Came across this Utah Railway GP40 sitting around on the western side of Salt Lake City. It didn't appear to be on, but there were a number of rail cars in the area.

Okay everybody, why is it important to not race the train to the grade crossing? About two weeks earlier, a tanker truck loaded with Ethanol attempted to beat this SD40-2 to a grade crossing. The result was a huge fireball and a lot of heat! Amazingly, nobody was hurt in the incident. The SD40-2 was doing local switching. It had no cars at the time and was running long hood forward, which is no doubt what saved the crew.

A trio of units sit near BNSF's engine shop in Denver as a (somewhat unusual) morning storm moves in toward Denver from the southwest. An interesting note about UP 5701. That was the number ex-Rio Grande GP60 #3155 was originally slated to get in UP's roster. However, the GP60s were moved into the 1900-number series before the unit could actual pick up the number.

This is a little bit of an odd sight! A UP C44AC-CTE is poking its head out of BNSF's engine shop in Denver. BNSF was borrowing the unit from UP, and at this moment the unit was being used to drag a unit out of the engine facility.

The eastbound Zephyr, led by UP 1989, backs down the passenger lead and into Union Station. Sure wish there had been a bit more water gathered in that pool on the ground!

In an effort to get a good view looking down the tracks, two of UP's steam team look out the fireman's side window of UP 844. The train is running down the outbound track through UP's 36th Street Yard.

After a great run (in both directions) another year of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Steam Train is in the books. Black and white felt right for this shot as the train back over Broadway and past Coors Field, into Union Station.

There was a time between 30 and 40 years ago when this general area saw many eight-axle diesel locomotives! UP 6936 sits on the Broadway overpass. Back when DDA40X's were (relatively) common, Broadway came to town via a viaduct running over the tracks.

Idling quietly in the Sterling Yard was this GP40X! This was a real treat as there are only four such units left on BNSF's roster. This was the only 4-axle unit to receive slanted radiators, similar to the SD45. Click the "Hear It!" link below for a brief snippet of sound.
