A string of five units sit ready for assignment, basking away in the later afternoon sun. The front-most unit is a Norfolk Southern SD70M-2, which don't make their way to Colorado very often. In the distance, a "Rocktober" banner is still posted on Coors Field, thanks to the Rockies fantastic performance since June.

Not a lot going on around UP's 36th Street Yard on this Sunday afternoon! A pair of GP15-1's (complete with Remote Control) sit nose to nose waiting for switching duties. Local power sits off to the left and two AC4400CWs sit ready for their next assignment on the right.

If I had taken this shot one year earlier, you would have seen the Ski Train cars in the shot! These are the tracks at Burnham at which the Ski Train was stored during the off season. Instead, the tracks are now filled with former Grande Luxe Express cars. The cars were purchased by Phil Anschutz and are currently being repaired and upgraded.

Several times each day (as needed), hostlers from North Yard transport units from North Yard to the shops at Burnham. These units may need repairs, or they may simply be due for their 90-day inspection. Here, a set of seven units is on the Burnham Lead. The units just came off of the Joint Line at Walnut Street.

This is the north end of UP's Boulder Industrial Lead (the Dent Branch). The line used to run all the way into Boulder from the east, but has since been severed. UP is currently using the north end for surplus covered hopper storage. The tracks have been paved over on County Road 6, which I am standing on to get this shot.

After a wonderful three day trip to Utah and Wyoming, it was time for the trip to come to a close. A wonderful sunset was a great way to end the day and the trip!

The mesa's north of Green River, WY have several jeep and hiking trails on them. If you can hike or drive on them, you can get an wonderful overview of Green River. Note the UP yard here in this shot...

I was rather surprised to find this nice pair of SD40-2s switch the yard in Green River, WY. UP 3475 is a snoot-nose SD40-2 and UP 9921 is a former MoPac unit with not dynamic brakes.

Just down the street from the old Rio Grande depot in Salt Lake City, you can still find the Rio Grande Hotel. A lot of railroad history in this part of town.

A look at the front of the Rio Grande depot in Salt Lake City. The last train to use the station was the California Zephyr on July 31, 1999. After that, the tracks behind the depot were removed and replaced with streets as a part of the "Gateway" project for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Here's the face of a rather unique unit. In the 1950's and 1960's, Union Pacific took delivery of a total of 54 turbine locomotives. The units lasted about 15 years and only two are preserved today. One of them is at the Utah State Railway Museum in Ogden, UT.

A look at the face of the only Rio Grande SD40-2 (to date) that will be preserved. The original number boards on 5371 went missing when the unit was sent to Cheyenne after it was retired in 2008. Union Pacific was good enough to find it some really nice replacements!

You may or may not be aware that every unit that is produced by either EMD or GE has a unique frame number. If you can find the frame number, you can (theoretically) find which unit it originally belonged to. 756046-16 is the frame number for DRGW 5371.

It's nice to know that at least one Rio Grande Tunnel Motor will be preserved. Union Pacific donated DRGW 5371 to the Utah State Railway Museum in Ogden, UT. Unfortunately, the museum does not have a lot of funds and the Tunnel Motor may never be restored to a "pristine" condition.

The crew that spotted DRGW 5371 on track one at Ogden's Union Station (the location of the Utah State Railway Museum) did a fantastic job spotting it just perfectly so that it was in direct sunlight in the morning!
