With its train built and ready to roll, the MDVSI-09 starts pulling toward the Limon Subdivision. An SD70M leads up a C40-9 (standard cab!) and a former Espee SD40T-2. This is the only (regular) daily manifest that runs on the Limon Subdivision.

A cab shot of KCS 4059 at BNSF's 38th Street Yard. Kansas City Southern ordered 60 new SD70ACes from EMD, and this was the unit from that delivery. KCS has subsequently ordered another 50 SD70ACes that will be numbered 4060 to 4129.

This is the first shot of Kansas City Southern's Retro-Belle scheme on the website here. Came across the freshly painted SD70ACe at BNSF's 38th Street Yard being moved from a fuel track to a ready track.

Yard Shots Rio Grande
While waiting for a westbound, I came across this classic Rio Grande Jordan Spread - AX-41 - sitting in the storage yard at the north end of North Yard. As far as I know, the spreader hasn't moved since the beginning of the New Year when it was taken to Kansas to help clear the Limon Sub.

The "Apex" of North Yard is located about half way between I-70 and Fox Junction. There is no shortage of coal empties waiting to head west in Denver either! Tracks one and two and the main all have trains on them!

Yard Shots Union Pacific, Rio Grande
The power for the South Local and the Rocky (West) Local sits on the Third Rail at North Yard. I'll never pass up an opportunity to get a shot of a Rio Grande (even if it is patched) unit sitting in the falling snow!

Even though there is quite a lot of clutter in this shot, I had to take it. It reminds me of a mama duck moving along with its ducklings following. This SD40T-2 leads up three "baby tunnel motors"; GP15-1s.

There is something about black and white on a cold, snowy day that just seems appropriate! Large snow flakes fall in front of the camera while this former Espee Tunnel Motor poses for a shot. You can clearly see that UP 2937 started life (on UP's roster) as UP 4589. The GP40-2 to the right - UP 1364 - started life as a Rio Grande unit!

It is always worth taking a picture of a Tunnel Motor. Doesn't matter what the conditions of the weather are or even if there are things in the way of the shot! This particular T-2 comes to UP from Espee. UP 2937 started life as SP 8264. It briefly held the number UP 4589 before making room for the SD70Ms.

I'll wager that this unit (and others like it) won't be around on UP's roster long after this shot. This B40-8 (yep, a 4-axle unit) is actually of Espee heritage, delivered in 1987 as SP 8022. It was also delivered as a B39-8, but UP changed the designation in 1999. I suspect these units will follow the path of their "U-Boat" ancestors before long.

After coming into town on a southbound train, the power cut away from the train and headed toward Union Station to wye the power. After completing the move, this power is headed back toward the yard office at 36th Street. Coors Field is in the background to the left.

The current power for the South Local and the Rocky Local sits near the yard office in North Yard. This is very close to the spot that Rio Grande regularly kept a pair of GP30s. Case-in-point is this photo from 1988. This is the oldest picture that I personally shot that I have on my site! I had just turned nine years old had a point-and-shoot camera for this particular shot.

One of only five "crew cab" GP50s to ever be built, BNSF 3160 was the second of two units switching BNSF's 31st Street Yard on a gloomy, overcast day. Amazingly, I have two of the five units (as of this photo) captured! Here is a link to BNSF 3159, which came down the Front Range Sub in November 2006.

It's been years since I last recalling seeing class lights illuminated on a unit, but UP 1344 just happened to have (white) class lights fired up while sitting in the yard at UP's 36th Street in Denver. It was nearly two years ago (Dec 17, 2005) that DRGW 3121 was patched and changed to UP 1344.

Certainly not the best lighting on this overcast December afternoon, but a shot worth taking nonetheless! The Beer Run is coming into the 31st Street Yard with some very interesting power. A cascade green SD40-2 leads up a warbonnet C44-9W, a white face GP30 (now a GP39M), and a H1 B40-8.
