Having not been painted in at least 12 years, some of the older Santa Fe units are really starting to look a bit tattered! Take, for instance, BNSF 2475. Built roughly 45 years ago, this GP30 has been rebuilt and is now designated as a GP30u. Wonder how this will look in the New Image paint scheme!?

I'm not a huge fan of the "New Image" that BNSF has adopted...however, I will say that this recently-painted SW1500, switching at BNSF's 31st Street Yard in Denver, is pretty sharp looking!

Earlier in the week, a pair of cascade green SD60Ms took a work train down the Front Range Sub. I wasn't able to shoot the train on the main, but I did find the power sitting near the house in BNSF's yard. The units have barely been touched from the original BN paint. Just a small "BNSF" on the cab of each unit.

Having just backed up over the diamond at 23rd Street, the California Zephyr is just minutes away from its station stop in Denver. The sun, however, is in the western sky at this point as Amtrak is running about six hours late due to a BNSF derailment on the Brush Subdivision.

Finally making it to Denver (after being delayed six hours due to a BNSF derailment), the westbound California Zephyr comes around the wye at 23rd Street. Once on the Buck Main, the train will back into Union Station.

Comprised of a string of doublestacks, some of the newest power on the road work to shove the train back into the intermodal facility at 36th Street. A former Missouri Pacific GP38-2 sits idling away as the intermodal train moves past it.

With a nose only a mother could love, this SD70ACe is moving backward, pushing the ZLADV back into the intermodal facility at 36th Street. Since the SD70ACe is more like its sibling the SD70MAC inside (even though it looks more like is cousing, the SD90MAC on the outside), hopefully this unit will be around for many years to come.

BNSF has a track that connects the north end of Rennicks to the north end of 38th Street. Before today, I had never seen the track used (although I'm sure it is used regularly). The track runs on the south side of 48th Street under I-25, around the north end of a park, then across Washington Street and the Platte River and into the yard. Here, a transfer holds near National Western Drive at a red flag, waiting for authority to come into the yard.

This train was loaded at the Energy Coal Mine on the Craig Branch in the Colorado high country. Here, the train is coming off the Belt Industrial Lead toward 36th Street, where it will make a sharp left turn and head east on the Limon Subdivision.

All twenty of the SD90MACs (with a true 6000 HP prime mover) that UP still has on its roster were in storage at Burnham - in one long line - at the end of 2007. Who knows if these units will ever be reactivated, or if they perished soon after the inception, similar to the U50 about thirty years ago.

Starting in 1997, Union Pacific took delivery of 21 SD90MACs with 4-cylinder, 6000 HP prime movers. Roughly a decade later finds 20 of these 21 units in storage, not being used. The 21st unit has been returned to EMD for testing purposes. One of the 20 units in storage, UP 8923 (ex-UP 8513) is seen at Burnham in Denver.

Always gotta grab a shot of an SD75 whenever you see one! The SD75's were not a hugely popular model (as far as a lot of models go). Between the SD75M and the SD75I, only 207 units were ever produced. The units have 4,300 horsepower compared to the 4,000 horsepower offered in the SD70-series units.

This interesting string of (light) power came in off the Brush Sub and is headed for the house for fueling and sanding. The power consists of an ES44AC, a B40-8, an SD40-2, and an SD75M!

One of the switch jobs that works out of 31st Street is the Salt Mine...it is so named as you might expect. Because everybody goes to work in the "salt mines"! The power on this day was very unique. Two former Santa Fe units - a GP60M and a B40-8 - work the switch job.

At Pueblo Junction, trains can either turn to the north and head toward the Joint Line and Denver, or turn to the south and either head toward the Pueblo Subdivision (and La Junta) or the Spanish Peaks Subdivision (and Trinidad). This particular train is a local headed for La Junta.
