A string of about two dozen units sits at UP's Burnham Shops in storage. Whether or not this is temporary storage or not remains to be seen. Most of these units have been here since early December 2006. The line consists of SD40-2s, SD50s, SD60s, C40-8s and some switchers. UP 9858 (ex-SP 5514, nee-DRGW 5514) is on the south end of the string of units. The tracks in the foreground are a part of RTD's Light Rail system in Denver.

Every since the start of December 2006, a few of the older units on UP's system have been placed in storage. Such is the case with UP 9858, sitting on a yard track in the Burnham Shops in Denver. Up until August 2001, this unit was SP 5514 (ex-DRGW 5514). It was patched after the UP merger and renumbered UP 5108. It kept that number for a mere 13 months, when it was renumbered to UP 9858 in September 2002 to make room for the SD70M's.

This is, unfortunately, the best shot that I could get of UP 9860, formerly DRGW 5516. This unit has seen several paint scheme and several numbers since being delivered to the Grande in 1984. It started, of course, as DRGW 5516. It was later painted in the Espee fly letter scheme and numbered SP 5516. After the UP merger, it was the first former Grande SD50 to be repainted (November 14, 1997) and received the number UP 5110. That latest until August 8, 2002 when its number was changed to UP 9860. Here it sits in temporary storage at the Burnham shops.

The design of the EMD's spartan cab, first seen on the GP35's, is definitely my favorite of any cab. While there were some minor changes over the years, the spartan cab remained basically the same all the way through the standard cab SD70's, when wide cabs started appearing. Here, UP 8601 (ex-DRGW 5410) sits idling in 36th street.

Do you recognize this face? Baby wings throwing you off perhaps? Prior to August of 2001, you definitely would have known the face of DRGW 5410! This former Grande T-2 has received a full repaint, including the previously mentioned baby wings and the "lightning bolt" on the long hood. The unit was idling away in the 36th street yard.

Even though they are still relatively common, one day all of the green and white BN units will be repainted into the current BNSF scheme (whatever that may be at the time). So, I try to get as many shots as I can of these beauties! BNSF 2815 is now designated as a GP39M (ex-GP30) and BNSF 2926 is now designated as a GP39E (ex-GP39-2).

Yard Shots EMD Leasing
The so called "Oakway" SD60's in the blue and white leaser scheme are not an uncommon sight in Denver these days. In 1986, Burlington Northern leased 100 (EMD 9000 to 9099) SD60's from EMD through Oakway Inc. Twenty years later, these units are still in remarkably good shape, considering they are still in their original paint!

Riding in style! At $300/ticket, citizens of Colorado were able to ride with Governor Ritter on his whistle stop tour of the front range between Greeley and Pueblo.

It had been rumored that the E-units were going to be the power on Bill Ritter's Governor's Special. That rumor turned out to be false and SD70M's were used instead. UP did a wonderful job of finding two clean units. In this shot, the train is about to pass underneath Park Avenue in Denver on the approach to Union Station.

On the approach to Union Station, you can clearly see the four vista domes on the train along the top. On the last car, Governor Bill Ritter is waiting for the stop in Denver.

A quick roster shot of UP 1358 - the Colorado Springs switcher - as it idles away on a Sunday afternoon. UP 1358 is one of the few former Rio Grande units to still have its class lights in place and operational (although they were off at this point).

UP 1358 has been the Colorado Springs switcher for several months now. It sits near the Colorado Springs depot. A coal empty sits tied down on the Colorado Springs siding on the conductor side of 1358. The Rio Grande caboose behind is still used when 1358 departs the yard on local duties.

Even though it is less that a year old, the bottom half of this ES44DC is starting to show some wear! BNSF 7789 leads the HDENKCK-07 (Denver to Kansas City) south toward the Joint Line. The front of the unit is evidence of the snowy winter the mid-west has had.

BNSF doesn't have all that many switchers on the roster these days. More often, rebuilt GP30's, GP35's or SD40-2's are used for switching. However, you do run across a classic switcher from time to time. Such is the case here with SW10, BNSF 3630.

This GP15-1 has a long heritage as noted by Norms comment! It is now owned by Locomotive Leasing Partners, sits near the engine house at BNSF's Denver yards. Note the window extension on the engineers window, giving the engineer great visibility.
